"That. Was. Fun!" I jumped and exclaimed.
Hendery and I had just visited the aquarium near our house. We saw a variety of fish. We also saw dolphins, orcas, sharks, otters, sea lions, and more. If I listed them all, we would be standing here all day long.
As Hendery and I walked out of the door, droplets of water fell on my head. I put out my hand, palm facing upward, and glanced at the sky. More droplets trickled down my palm.
"Hey, do you think it's going to..." Hendery started but didn't need to finish his sentence.
"Rain?"
Water started pouring from the sky. People hurried out of the aquarium and back home or wherever they needed to be.
"The forecast didn't show that it was going to rain today, otherwise I would've brought an umbrella along," I said.
"It's okay," Hendery replied. "Wait, I have an idea."
He rushed back inside the aquarium and ran back outside. Hendery handed me a bunch of pamphlets that promoted the aquarium. I carefully analyzed the pamphlets, they were thick and not like your everyday notebook paper. When I touched the surface of the pamphlet, it was smooth.
"It's not going to work as well but it'll get us home. Well if we run fast for 5 minutes that is."
I sighed and opened up the pamphlets.
"Layer them so that it's harder for the rain to reach your head."
"This kind of stuff only works in stories you know," I commented.
Thanks to Hendery's idea, we were less wet than we would've been without the pamphlets. Both of us ran to the nearest shop that had an extended roof on it. We stood under the roof for some time and stared at the rain that continued falling endlessly.
"It doesn't look like the rain is going to stop anytime soon," I said.
"Why is it even raining right now? Isn't it supposed to be summer?" Hendery questioned.
"I don't know, maybe the author wants to write a cute scene."
"What?"
"Nothing," I winked. "Oh look, there's an ice cream parlor. I think it's the new one that just opened up."
"Panda, we're going to get wet-"
I grabbed his hand and ran across the street. Thankfully, we didn't slip or fall on the road and no car hit us. We stopped in front of a door that had a colorful sign that said the word open. I pushed the door and strolled inside.
"Mingxia, it's raining and you want ice cream?"
"Didn't you say it was summer?"
"Yeah but-"
"Besides, I'm paying for it," I gestured to the counter. "Go pick a flavor."
"Okay," Hendery walked up to the counter and I followed. "Can we have a bowl together?"
"Yeah, that would be nice."
The two of us ordered a bowl of ice cream with cotton candy, Hendery's choice, and chocolate fudge, my choice. We sat across from each other at a table and ate our ice cream together. As we talked and gazed out of the window, the rain eventually slowed down.
After finishing the bowl, Hendery took my hand and we ran out to the sidewalk. It had stopped raining and went back to being a sunny summer day. Hendery pointed to the sky and I looked up. An arc of 7 colors stretched across the horizon. We both smiled and glanced at each other.
"Even after rainy days, there's a rainbow to look forward to," Hendery said.
