Chapter 5: The first week

The first week at Tatnall was pretty good. I had made some new friends and I had finally found a group of friends to sit with during lunch. It was still a bit weird because I could see a lot of people staring and wondering who I was. I mean I was used to it, it happened every time I moved to a new school so it didn't bother me too much. The thing that did bother me was the butterflies I got every time I got out of the car in the morning. It wasn't because I was nervous about my new school, it was because of him. Hunter. I know, I know, we barely know each other but it felt like we've known each other for ages. Conversation with him was so easy. He was fun to be around.

On Friday morning I had Spanish with Hunter. When I tell you I hated Spanish, I mean I actually hated it. I wasn't the worst at it but honestly Spanish was one of the hardest languages I've had to learn. I was sitting next to one of my friends who I hang out at lunch with, Ella. We were sitting at the back of the class next to a window. Hunter was sitting with one of his friends in front of us.

"Buenos días clase, espero que hayan hecho la hoja de trabajo que les di el miércoles." the Spanish teacher Mr Rodríguez announced. He began writing on the whiteboard.

I had no idea what he just said. I could see the class looking through their books and taking out some kind of worksheet. I looked over at Ella's table, the heading read 'Gramática española, Futuro perfecto.'

"Shit, I completely forgot about the Spanish worksheet! Did you finish it?" I asked Ella frantically.

I quickly flipped open my book to see my worksheet completely empty. Ella passed me a pen and I started copying her notes. I had no idea what any of it meant.

"Hurry, he's coming, write faster!" Ella whispered.

I flipped Ella's worksheet around. It was blank.

"Ella, you forgot to finish the back of the worksheet!" I nudged her.

"I knew I was forgot to do something! My mum asked me to do the dishes while I was doing this worksheet." I could tell Ella was slightly panicking. "Mr Rodríguez is going to make us stay back at lunch if we don't finish it!"

At that moment Hunter turned around and whispered, "Could you two be any louder? If you guys ever try to cheat during a test, you'll get caught."

I looked around the class and I could see Mr Rodríguez talking to some girls sitting in the middle of the class. Hunter handed me his Spanish worksheet. Ella and I started copying his answers as fast as we could. As soon as we finished, we handed Hunter back his worksheet.

"Mr Rodríguez won't be able to mark my worksheet, it looks like a bunch of gibberish." I sighed.

"Well I guess that's what we get for taking Spanish. I didn't even want to be in this class." Ella started massaging her hand.

I could hear Mr Rodríguez talking to Hunter and his friend. It wouldn't be long until he would get to us. I pretended to be checking my work.

"Hola señoras, cómo están hoy?"

"Bien, señor, aquí están nuestras hojas de trabajo." Ella replied.

"Uh, yes." I nodded.

And with that he took our worksheets and moved onto the next students.

"I'm just wondering why you guys took Spanish if you don't seem to know it. I mean there's French and Latin you know." Hunter's friend turned around and asked us. His brown, wavy hair was swept over his brown eyes. He was kinda cute, especially with his freckles. What is up with all the cute boys here?

"Bueno, lo siento, no hablamos español con fluidez como tú, Noah." Ella scoffed. "You know what, you should just teach the class, since you're so fluent in Spanish."

"Well, I'm just here because I'm not exactly good at the other languages either. If there was a German languages class, I would be out of here straight away, but there isn't." I replied.

"I would like to see you try learning German." Ella laughed.

"No thank you, I'm already taking Latin. Besides, I'm not even German." Noah swept his hair back. (Why am I noticing this? I don't know)

"Look at you, Mr worldwide, what are you now? Trilingual?" Ella rolled her eyes.

"I mean I'm not German or Spanish, yet here I am." I looked at Noah. "To be honest I don't exactly know my family's origins." (you choose whatever nationality you want to be ;))

"Well, I'm half Spanish, a quarter British and a quarter Japanese." Hunter said mockingly.

"Hey, if you're going to mock me, at least get it right, I'm not a quarter British, I'm a quarter European."

"Ladies and gentlemen, please focus on the whiteboard, we are learning past tense in Spanish. I know for a fact that you Ella, seem to have struggled with this in the past."

Noah and Hunter turned back around. For about half an hour Ella and actually listened to Mr Rodríguez.

"Y/n, I think you should just do beginners French, this is a really fast paced Spanish course." Noah turned back around.

The audacity this guy had.

"Just cause I don't reply in Spanish, doesn't mean I don't actually know the language. Fun fact Señor Noah, I've lived in more countries than you and even though I may not be fluent in all languages, at least I know how to speak a lot more languages than you." I angrily whispered to him.

Hunter smiled at me and I could tell Ella was trying not to laugh. The boys sitting in the row besides us, turned around and stared. That seemed to shut him up for about five minutes before he turned back around.

"So anyways, I'll excuse that outburst, but how would you like to take a crash course in Spanish with me and Hunter?"

"Why would we want to learn Spanish with you?" Ella stared at Noah.

"Cause you need all the help you can get."

"I'll study with Y/n and Hunter, but not with you."

"Come on, I promise, he won't be like this at the study session, right?" Hunter nudged Noah.

"Yeah, yeah, are you in or not? I've got to reserve the seats." Noah scowled.

"Reserve for who? You literally have no friends." Ella replied.

They would honestly make such a cute couple.

"The study session is on Monday, after school. We'll meet at the local library at like 4." as Hunter turned back around to the front, Mr Rodríguez was waiting in front of Noah and Hunter's desks. He had an annoyed look on his face. Hunter kicked Noah under the table. Noah quickly turned to face the front.

"Would you two like to get moved to the front. I have seen you two turn around to talk to these girls for the fifth time today. Let Y/n learn, she's got a lot of catching up to do. Don't let me catch you two talk to the girls in the last ten minutes of the lesson or you'll be spending lunch with me today." Mr Rodríguez walked back to the front.

"Monday 4pm, local library, see you then." Hunter whispered.
