Chapter Twenty-Four

Beth storms out of her house and across to the street toward Mick's car and she knocks on his darkened window. Mick rolls his window down and looks at the woman in a bathrobe and pajama pants. She's not as hot as Caroline, but she does have something going on. He sees Alex's infatuation, sort of.

"Good morning," Mick greets with his deep voice.

"I called the cops," Beth declares.

Mick chuckles. "Okay," he says.

"I have kids."

"I ain't got no issue with them," Mick informs her.

Beth turns to look up the street as a police car drives slowly down it, their lights off. Mick notices, too, but he doesn't react. He's not worried about a cop. If he's popped, Caroline or Rio will get him out of jail just as fast. Caroline has become rich since becoming a boss and everyone knows Rio is hooked up with a shit ton of cash because of business. Beth whirls back around to look at the gangster, to Caroline's new right hand.

"You don't wanna do that," Mick warms.

"Oh, I think I do," Beth replies.

Mick chuckles. He looks down and shakes his head before looking up again. "It's up to you," he states.

"Fine," Beth replies, throwing her arms up to the side. "Get arrested."

"Okay," Mick replies with no worries.

Beth now understand how he made it to Caroline's right hand and still works with Rio. He is careless because he knows that he's got protection when it comes to his newest boss and Rio.

"But you know what I gotta do when I get out," Mick adds casually.

Officer Paterson pulls up and she looks between Beth and Mick. "How we doing, folks?" She asks and she looks at a silent Beth and raises her eyebrows. "Ma'am, we got a call about someone in the neighborhood?"

"I - I called, yeah. Um...." Beth stammers. She glances at Mick and finds him watching her as he strokes his facial hair. "It's..." Beth waves her arms, chuckling. "Everything's okay, officer. Thank you. Sorry."

"Y'all have a good day, then," Officer Paterson says hesitantly before driving on down the road.

Beth watches with a heavy heart as the cop drives away. Her heart becomes heavier and heavier with the more distance she puts between them.

Rio and Alex walk into an establishment after Mick called Caroline. Care sent her fiancée and her ex boyfriend to deal with Beth because she is their problem. She has a shit done of gangsters working for her and she has seven kids, and she's pregnant with two more.

"What's good?"

Alex and Rio shake Mick's hand as Alexander shares at Elizabeth, who is sitting and waiting for Caroline. She has a feeling Care won't come, though. They walkover and sit on either side of her. Beth turns to Rio as Alex watches her. When she said she lost the baby, Alex gets up and he leaves.

Rio stays behind and listens to what Beth has to say.
