It was a beautiful sunny morning at Burbank, San Fernando Valley, California, on June 22, 1962. A twelve-year-old female with long wavy red hair and bright blue eyes named Katherine Smalls looked out the window with a conflicted gaze.

A week ago, Katherine finished her sixth-grade year at a public school in Long Beach, California. She was sad that school ended since she won't be seeing her best friends till the next school term, which was in the fall. She did reassure them that she would attend the seventh-grade year with them.

However, Katherine's promise to her best friends soon gets broken when she finds out from her parents—her father, Bill Smalls, and her stepmother, Lillian Smalls, that they will be leaving Long Beach for a town in the San Fernando Valley for her father's job.

" SHUT UP!" Katherine shouts while sitting at the dining table and staring at her parents and younger stepbrother, ten-year-old Scotty Smalls, with mixed emotions.

Lillian looked at her husband and stepdaughter with a concerned gaze. She noticed her husband stare at their daughter with a stern look.

" Language, Katherine," Bills firmly speaks.

" It's not even a bad word!" Katherine retorts.

Scotty silently stared at the debacle. He has always admired his older stepsister since she has the guts to speak stuff she disagrees with against their father.

" Katherine. Sweetheart. We are only moving so that your father is close to his new job," Lillian calmly speaks.

" Have you thought about how your children would feel about this sudden move?" Katherine asked with a raised eyebrow. " I promised my best friends that I would be attending the 7th grade with them this fall!" She snapped.

" You can make new friends at the new school you and your brother will be attending in the fall," Bill merely responded.

Katherine stared at her father in disbelief.

" Ugh! So unfair!" Katherine stands up.

" You haven't touched your food," Lillian looked at her daughter.

" I lost my appetite," Katherine murmured.

" Eat your dinner, or you get grounded for a week," Bill firmly speaks.

" Have a lovely dinner!" Katherine looks away, not caring that she would get grounded because she is upset with the idea of moving to a new neighborhood. She walks out of the dining room and heads to her bedroom, slamming the door behind her.

" That girl," Bill sighs in frustration while shaking his head.

" Let me talk to her, Dear," Lillian comforted. She grabs Katherine's untouched food and walks out of the dining room.

Bill watched his wife leave the dining room. He then sees Scotty eating his dinner since the younger male didn't want his stepfather's anger to get directed at him.

Bill looks away and grunts as he continues to eat his dinner.

Lillian walks towards Katherine's bedroom. She knocks on the door and hears her stepdaughter speak.

" Scotty. I am not in the mood to play chess with you. Maybe later," Katherine speaks.

Lillian's gaze softened. She is glad that her stepdaughter and her son have a close relationship. Even though her stepdaughter is upset with the idea of moving to a new town, she still does not mind playing with her son when she feels better.
