The Holy Spirit is the messenger of God that was sent down after Jesus' ascension back into Heaven. The Holy Spirit is the reason we are able to form a communicative relationship with God. Once we accept Jesus as our Savior, the Holy Spirit comes into our lives and serves as a connection between us amd our Heavenly Father. That's a really drawn out way of saying the Holy Spirit is essentially God's voice.

Why is it important to listen for God's voice?

•Job 33:14-33•

For God does speak—now one way, now another— though no one perceives it. In a dream, in a vision of the night, when deep sleep falls on people as they slumber in their beds, he may speak in their ears and terrify them with warnings, to turn them from wrongdoing and keep them from pride, to preserve them from the pit, their lives from perishing by the sword. “Or someone may be chastened on a bed of pain with constant distress in their bones, so that their body finds food repulsive and their soul loathes the choicest meal. Their flesh wastes away to nothing, and their bones, once hidden, now stick out. They draw near to the pit, and their life to the messengers of death. Yet if there is an angel at their side, a messenger, one out of a thousand, sent to tell them how to be upright, and he is gracious to that person and says to God, ‘Spare them from going down to the pit; I have found a ransom for them— let their flesh be renewed like a child’s; let them be restored as in the days of their youth’— then that person can pray to God and find favor with him, they will see God’s face and shout for joy; he will restore them to full well-being. And they will go to others and say, ‘I have sinned, I have perverted what is right, but I did not get what I deserved. God has delivered me from going down to the pit, and I shall live to enjoy the light of life.’ “God does all these things to a person— twice, even three times— to turn them back from the pit, that the light of life may shine on them. “Pay attention, Job, and listen to me; be silent, and I will speak. If you have anything to say, answer me; speak up, for I want to vindicate you. But if not, then listen to me; be silent, and I will teach you wisdom.”

- As Christians we all know God has a plan for each of our lives and we are always seeking His will and purpose for our lives. That in and of itself is a major reason we should want and we need to listen for God's voice; in order to hear and receive His guidance in our path to fulfilling that plan and following His will for our lives.

•Hebrews 2:1-4•

We must pay the most careful attention, therefore, to what we have heard, so that we do not drift away. For since the message spoken through angels was binding, and every violation and disobedience received its just punishment, how shall we escape if we ignore so great a salvation? This salvation, which was first announced by the Lord, was confirmed to us by those who heard him. God also testified to it by signs, wonders and various miracles, and by gifts of the Holy Spirit distributed according to his will.

- Another reason we should want to and we need to listen for God's voice is because, if we love Him and have a relationship with Him, we should want Him and not want to drift away from Him. What happens when you haven't seen a certain friend or family member for a while? You can start to forget what they look like or what their voice sounds like, maybe? You begin to drift apart. The same thing can happen with God if we don't seek Him or to hear His voice.
