the skeletal system is the frame of the human body

the skeleton protects internal organs such as the heart, lungs, and the brain

bone growth

as you grow the cartilage in your bones grow. overtime it slowly  gets replaced by bone with the help of calcium. this process is called ossification

fractures to bones can affect bone growth

particularly if it is on a growth plate

what you eat effects how bones grow

- a diet high in calcium and vitamin d is important for bone growth

- an overconsumption of sugary soft drinks, caffeine and unhealthy foods can extract calcium from bones

weight bearing

weight bearing exercise helps keep our bones strong

examples: walking, lunges, dancing, jogging, push ups and using weight

recommended to do weight bearing exercises twice a week!

disease

diseases such as osteoporosis and osteoarthritis can affect the growth and stength of bones.

osteoporosis - is when the bone becomes less dense

osteoarthritis - is when the joints deteriorate 

thoracic cage

protects lungs and heart

the bones in front of the organs provide protection incase of damage. it will damage the bones and not the organs

cranium + jaw bone

protects our important brain

the skull provides protection to our brain and eyes (the eye sockets) so if damage occurs it wont badly damage an organ

scapula

protects the posterior (back) of the chest

it provides motion in 6 different ways while also keeping the posterior safe

being able to bend your knee one way to walk

the lower arm

one of two bones that forms at the elbow joint

radius

the lower arm

one of two bones that forms the radio-carpel joint at the wrist and the radio-ulnar joint at the elbow

femur

the thigh bone

supports the weight of the body and allowing motion of the body

tibia/fibula

the two bones located in the lower leg

provides stability and assists rotation with the ankle joint

vertebrae

holds the cervical spine, thoracic spine, lumbar spine, sacral spine, and the tailbone

protects the spinal cord
