Vapor

  I get up and make myself breakfast before  quickly rushing to the door to head to training for the day.

"Not even a good morning?" My mother says causing me to suddenly stop and turn to her.

"Morning, Mom." I quickly hug her before reaching for the door.

"Honey....." She says softly, "You can't just keep avoiding your father...." She says.

"I know." I say simply before leaving the house and driving to base. I park and twirl my keychain around my finger before putting it in my pocket,

"Hey, Vapor!" Phoenix, the only other girl in Top Gun says.

"Hi, Phoenix!" I say happily with a smile.

We walk into the large, open, hanger together and there are several seats in rows, behind a large chalk board and pedestal.

"Oh boy.." Phoenix says rolling her eyes and I laugh, "Another lecture." She says and I shake my head,

"Just what I wanted today." I sigh and she chuckles then walks over and sits next to Bob,  who looks back at me and smiles, and I smile back and shyly wave. I look into his beautiful green eyes, that are surrounded by gold framed glasses, and my heart fills with butterflies so I quickly look away. I've had a crush on him since day one of our training but I've never really been able to have a full conversation with him since we usually all hang out in a group. I start to walk over to him but my legs tense up so I sit next to Rooster instead,

"Hey." I say as my heart slightly drops, disappointed in myself.

"What's going on,Vapor?" He asks and I shrug,

"Nothing interesting." I laugh, "I see you still won't shave." I laugh as I look at his 80s style mustache.

"Hey I'm proud of this." His runs his fingers along it and I shake my head laughing.

"Don't get too close, Rooster. Wouldn't want her to kill you too." Hangman say as he sits backwards in his seat so he can look at us. I stand up quickly, causing my chair to fall down behind me,

"Want to say that again?!" I yell as anger fills my body. He stands up and walks up to me until we are face to face, all eyes are on us at this point, but I keep a straight face to show him I'm not afraid,

"You. Killed. Your. Wingman." He says looking me in the eyes.

"You cocky son of a...!" I stop myself from hitting him when I hear footsteps behind me.

"Lottie?" A familiar voice says, the voice of a family friend, a voice I would recognize anywhere.

"Maverick?!" I whip around to see him standing there, "Maverick!!!" I yell happily as I hug him and he hugs back gently.

"How's your father?" He asks as he gently rubs my back.

"He's got cancer and getting worse." I say as I let go of him and stand tall with perfect posture and salute him and he nods. I sit back down next to Rooster and take a deep breath, when I suddenly feel like someone is looking at me so I look up just in time to see Bob turn his head away causing me to blush and look back down at my hands.

"Maverick will be training you all for this mission." Our commander says and Rooster rolls his eyes,

"Great..." He mumbles.

"I'll be splitting you all up into pairs for today. Phoenix and Bob, Fanboy and Coyote, and Vapor and....." He looks between Rooster and Hangman for a few seconds before locking his eyes on Hangman, "Vapor and Hangman." He says and him and I both sigh.

"You have GOT to be kidding me." I say quietly to myself as I start thinking of the horrors this day is about to bring.
