Alfie had an appartement in walking distance of the bakery. Every morning he walked to the bakery with his cane and his dog and every morning he would stop at a bakery. A real bakery where they sold actual bread. He would walk in and order the same exact thing, which he would take with him and eat at his desk for breakfast while reading the morning paper. This was his morning routine.

You were new to town. You had just moved to the big city because your aunt had found you a job as switchboard operator. You had to pass this bakery on your way to work. It was your first day and you were quite nervous, so nervous you had forgotten to eat breakfast.

Just as Alfie was reaching for the door handle you walked out of the bakery nearly bumping into him. You had to look up at him because he was a fair bit taller than you and you realized you nearly bumped into a very handsome man. Flustered you quickly apologized and hurried off to work, mentally reprimanding yourself for being so clumsy.

If you had looked back you would have seen Alfie Solomon smirking while he watched you walk away until you turned the corner.

_______

After that Alfie always noticed you exiting the bakery just before he got there. For some reason you always caught his eye, admiring you from afar. He caught himself thinking about you during the quiet moments of his day.

_______

One morning Alfie decided to leave for work a bit earlier. He told himself that he didn't do it for any specific reason. He left earlier just because he felt like it. Defiantly not because he was hoping to run into that beautiful lady he couldn't stop thinking about.

This time you were about to order when you heard the bell chime as the door opened and Alfie Solomons entered the bakery. You being new to town of course didn't know who this man was but you vaguely remembered him as the handsome stranger you nearly bumped into a few weeks ago.

You were quickly confused at the baker's reaction to seeing Alfie Solomon. The man behind the counter turned white as paper and smiled nervously, completely ignoring you even though you were just about to order. "Good morning Mr.Solomons. How may I help you? The usual?" he asked

"Where are your manners, mate? Shouldn't you serve the pretty lady first?" Alfie replied raising an eyebrow. You couldn't help but blush.

The baker swallowed nervously but then with that same forced smile answered "Yes, of course sir, sorry my apologies. What may it be for the lady?".

Confused it toke you a few seconds to answer but you quickly placed your order. You waited in awkward silence until you got what you requested and left. This time you did look back at the tall handsome man with his big dog sitting neatly beside him.

_______

After that you also started noticing Mr.Solomons walking down the street with his big bullmastiff every morning. You even started looking for him through the bakery window while you waited in line, looking away as he neared the shop not wanting to be caught.

The baker of course saw this and couldn't help but shake his head but you were too focused on the window to notice this. Poor girl he thought she doesn't know what she's getting herself into but he didn't have the courage to tell you this.

Alfie ended up "coincidentally" leaving earlier for work every morning. Patiently waiting in line behind you as you made your order.

Eventually the bakery seemed to always suspiciously clear out just before Mr.Solomons arrived. So it always ended up being just the two of you and the baker in the shop. You decided to ignore this fact. Just a coincidence you told yourself even though you knew it wasn't.

You felt Mr.Solomons staring at you most mornings and tried to hide your blush. He was Alfie Solomons, he wasn't embarrassed about anything and defiantly not staring at pretty lady but he realized that it might make you uncomfortable and looked away. He didn't want to make you uncomfortable but he couldn't help stealing glances at you whenever he could.

You found this Mr.Solomons quite intriguing and secretly hoped that he would strike up a conversation with you but he never did.

Unbeknownst to you Alfie ended up debating saying something to you nearly every morning but always decided against in the end. A dangerous gangster like him shouldn't approach a sensible young lady like you. It would just cause trouble.
