TW: Main character death

Plot described in the first one-shot of the multifandom lore. I just got really sad this morning and thought of the Vormir scene in Infinity War/Endgame, but if Angel and Spamton did it instead. This isn't canon to the lore, it's just an AU.

"Welcome." came a chilling male voice from behind the two. They turned, Spamton gasping softly in surprise as they beheld a smoky, hooded figure. "Angel, daughter of Wonder. Spamton, son of Toby."

Angel glanced at Spamton. "Who the hell's Toby?" she asked, and he shrugged. "It probably doesn't matter. How do you know who we are?"

"It is my curse to know all who journey here." said the mysterious figure.

"Uh...alright then." Angel muttered. "Can you take us to the Soul Stone?"

The figure moved forward. "You should know that it extracts a terrible price."

Angel huffed. "Goddamn it...did you bring any money?" she asked Spamton, who shook his head. "Welp, we're flat broke, but if this price of yours involves something else, we're ready."

"We all think that at first." the figure said, moving forward, and his face could be clearly scene behind his hood. His skin was red, his face hollow and sunken, like a skull wrapped in flesh. "We are all wrong."

"CAN WE PLEASE [Get This Over With]??" Spamton asked. "I DON'T WANT TO BE HERE [Long]."

Angel nodded. "Lead the way, red-skull man."

Red Skull turned and lead the two up a flight of decrypt, crumbling stone stairs up to the top of the mountain, where two tall towers stretched up into the sky, almost scraping against the clouds. Angel shivered as the wind blew around them.

"So, Red Boi," she began. "How d'you know this place so well?"

"A lifetime ago, I, too, sought the stones," Red Skull explained. "I even held one in my hand...but it cast me out, banished me here. Guiding others to a treasure I cannot possess."

"Well, that's just sad..." she muttered. "Are we there yet, Reddington?"

Red Skull brought them to the edge of the mountain, where the ground suddenly ended, giving way to a steep drop that no mortal could even dream of surviving.

"What you seek lies in front of you..." Red Skull said. "as does what you fear."

"Do we have to go down there?" Angel asked. "Is that where the Stone is, down there? How the heck is anyone supposed to get it?"

"Soul holds a special place among the Infinity Stones." Red Skull told her. "You could say it has a certain wisdom. To ensure that whoever possesses it understands its power, the Stone demands a sacrifice."

"So it needs something? The price, or whatever?" Angel stepped towards him. "What's it need, Reddit?"

"In order to take the stone, you must lose that which you love." Red Skull spoke as if he was reciting a saying from some ancient tome. "A soul...for a soul."

Angel's eyes widened slightly. "Uh...well, that's dramatic." she muttered. "Spamton, you wanna throw something over that cliff? Did you bring anything you love?"

"ONLY YOU." he replied, not looking at her, but rather into the distance.

"Welp, how am I supposed to get down there? I mean, I can't die, can I? I..." she trailed off. "How the hell are we supposed to get this thing?"

Spamton didn't respond. He took a step forward, closer to the edge of the cliff.

"Be careful there, Spam." Angel said. "I don't want you to fall."

She set a hand on his shoulder, stepping beside him. "What is it?"

"I..." Spamton looked at her, then turned back to the horizon, not meeting her gaze. "I THINK I [Have To]."

"Have to what?" Angel asked. "What are you talking about? What d'you- please, will you look at me?"

Spamton turned to face Angel. "YOU- YOU'RE [Immortality], AREN'T YOU??" His voice shook ever so slightly. "ALL WE [Brought] IS OURSELVES. ONE OF US HAS TO [Die], AND..." He paused, drawing in a shaky breath. "I-I THINK IT'S ME."

"Wh-What?" Angel stammered, shaking her head. "No! Neither of us are dying! We can- We can find another way! There has to be another way!"

Spamton shook his head. "THERE ISN'T."

"Come on, there's gotta be!" Angel was starting to panic as she desperately attempted to think of an alternate solution. "I mean- do we even have to do this at all? Is restoring humanity really that important? W-We don't need to do this! I can't let you die!"

Spamton looked down, a tear falling from one eye as he took Angel's hand in his. "IT'S [Quite Alright], [Angel]."

"No it's not!" Angel shook her head, breathing hard. "Why-Why have you just accepted that you're gonna die?! You can't die, Spamton, y-you can't!"

"THERE'S [No Other Way], I HAVE TO DO THIS." Spamton insisted. "I'M NOT [Immortality] LIKE YOU. IF I [Die], YOU'LL GET THE [Infinity Stone] AND SAVE EVERYONE. YOU'LL BE A [Hero], [Angel]...A [Big Shot]."

"No...no, no!" Angel moved closer to Spamton, her hands shaking in his. Tears were clearly visible in her eyes. "No, I can't do that! I can't be any of that without you!"

"WITHOUT ME...YOU'RE [Yourself]." Spamton murmured, looking up at her. "AND THAT'S ALL THAT MATTERS."

"No..." Angel breathed, shaking her head again. Spamton leaned against her, wrapping his arms around her waist as she started to cry. "N-No, I can't...l-lose you..."

Tears were streaming down her cheeks now as she pulled Spamton closer to her, refusing to let him go. They stood there for a moment, unmoving, as they held onto each other, neither of them wanting to pull away.

"Y-You're just...accepting this...?" Angel managed to say. Spamton nodded his head.

"I-I'LL BE FINE, [Angel]." he murmured. "DON'T W-WORRY ABOUT ME. IT'S [About Time], ANYWAY."

"It's not, Spam...it's not..." Angel moved back a bit, her hand rising up to cup his cheek. "You mean m-more than half the universe t-to me...e-even if it would work, a-and we got all those people back...it wouldn't amount to anything. You'll still be gone..."

Spamton leaned into her touch, closing his eyes, knowing that this would be the last time he'd be able to do so. "IT'LL BE ALRIGHT, [Angel]." he murmured. "I'LL [Always] BE WITH YOU."

He took a step backwards, and Angel's hand fell, hanging limply by her side. A short moment passed before he reached up, taking his dual-colored glasses and pulling them off. Angel softly gasped. "Spam...you-"

"I WANT YOU TO HAVE THEM." he told her, taking her hand again, folding the glasses and pressing them into her hand. "TO [Remember] ME BY."

Angel's eyes widened as she took the glasses from him. "How could I ever forget you...?" she murmured incredulously. "You're my best friend, Spamton...I love you...!"

Spamton's eyes never left Angel's, all insecurities put aside as he took another step back, right on the edge of the cliff. Despite everything that was happening, despite knowing that he was about to die, a smile stood prominent on his face. "I LOVE YOU TOO, [Angel]...MORE THAN YOU'LL EVER KNOW."

He took a final step back. Angel couldn't do anything to stop him, only watch helplessly as he stood on the edge of the cliff for just a moment, before falling out of sight, plummeting towards the ground. She couldn't move at first, frozen with horror at what had just happened, tears streaming down her cheeks as she shook, a hand over her mouth to muffle her sobs.

Perhaps it was only her imagination, but she could've sworn that his voice called out to her one last time, echoing from far away, thick with emotion.

"WATCH ME FLY, [Angel]!!"

That was the last thing she heard before there was a burst of light from above, and everything faded away; everything except for the overwhelming pain that tore at her soul, and the anguish that flooded through her body.

Spamton was gone.
