"WE HAVE A FEMALE. . . NEAR AND EXPLOSION. . . SEVERE CONCUSSION. . . WITH INTERNAL BLEEDING―" The paramedic's voice got drowned in the waves of a ringing so loud Cleo thought she was near a beach in Malibu, the bright light coming through her barely opened eyelids made her foggy mind think she was actually laying face up on the golden sand near her dad's house. But the beeping, the commotion, and the frantic voices brought her back to her half-functioning senses. The metallic taste of iron coated her mouth, she gurgled as the thick liquid rose in her throat and barged in her mouth, demanding to come out.
"She's choking! Shift her to her side!" Cleo felt two pairs of hands pushing her and rolling her over to her right side. Blood spluttered out of her mouth, burning her throat, staining her lips, and spilling down her chin and cheek.
"We need an OR ready!"
"No," Cleo mumbled, "my dad, he's―" More blood pooled on her mouth and splattered past her bloodstained teeth. "I need to know if―"
"Your dad is fine, honey." The voice of a woman echoed in her ears. But as much as she wanted to believe her, Cleo knew it wasn't true, for she had seen the news before the bomb detonated. She had seen how their Malibu home exploded and crumbled into the blue tide. She had seen the headlines, 'Tony Stark presumed dead', 'Has our hero fallen?', and then her accident knocked her out, but Tony was all she had in mind when she woke up inside the ambulance.
