"Have you seen my sparkly hair clip?" Gus shook his head, "You are a grown woman what's the point of having that? More importantly why would you ever buy it?" I shrugged, "So I will feel pretty" He gaped at me like I had said something offensive, "You are smoking hot and you want to be pretty? Did you hit your head falling down the stairs?" The security started to laugh, "Brother don't go down that road. Women and their accessories are beyond us" I gave them a dirty look as they chuckled merrily. I turned around and lifted the cushion one by one. I searched under the couch and found them. I took three steps and landed on something wet. I wrinkled my nose, "I stepped on pee" Gus chuckled, "Go clean yourself up. I will find a mop." I washed my feet in the kitchen sink and grabbed a mop. I cleaned the pee and sat near the pile of clean clothes. Dan came to me enthusiastically. He was so cute that I couldn't find a way to stay angry with him so I scratched behind his ear. He barked happily and I decided after breakfast I will take him to dog training. I fed him some dog food and packed some treats.
When we reached the hospital I called Van Pelt to explain why I will be late. She congratulated me and promised not to tell Dimka. We got married and I took Dan with me to pick up a few things from work before I go to dog training. I called the precinct to collect some stuff from my desk. I called so that no one would be awkward when I get there. It turns out the threat was not from Apple. It was from the bone doctor. Dimka was waiting by my desk with flowers. He saw that I was blushing. He knew something had changed. He saw the ring on my finger and figured it out. He was so mad that he stomped his feet, cursed in Russian. He walked to his desk calmly and karate chopped it. It split right down the middle and one half landed painfully on the chief's toe. She screamed several profanities and he was sent to see the therapist. I knew if I laughed I would get desk duty when I get back or maybe even a more severe punishment so I calmly walked to the bathroom. I found a cubicle and let myself go. I laughed till I felt like my ribs would hurt. I walked out to see Van Pelt standing outside amused too. Her brother on the other hand was not amused. He had made a bet that Dimka will move back in. Now that Dimka had in a fit of rage blurted that I am married to someone else that means he owes his sister money and so did others. Van Pelt bet that I would move on. She earned the pot. The chief was also involved in the bet so I was shocked, "Do you guys have a life?" They shrugged that they have met anyone like me. They like to keep things interesting so the occasional bet is how it is done. Still doesn't give them the right to bet on my personal life still they did it. Van Pelt smiled, "Now you can upgrade to man problems" This made me smile, "How much did you win?" She shrugged, "Close to four thousand" I looked at her brother, "Pay her now"
After dog training I treated him with snacks and love. We got bored being able to do nothing so we decided to go for a drive and surprisingly arrived at the hospital. I saw Gus was not feeling good so Dan and I hugged him. His worries evaporated and we ate fried chicken and waffles. He gave me a cold can of Coke. Dan and I wished him luck and I picked up my ward from school.
She had a ton of homework which I made sure she finished after which we took a break to play Mortal Kombat. We were playing Street Fighter when Gus arrived. He laughed, "I didn't know girls liked to play video games." I winked, "We do. Just not horrible games like Grand Theft Auto or Call of Duty" He smiled and walked to the master bedroom to take a shower and change. Cheryl asked me why Gus's expression changed when I said Call of Duty. I explained that he has served this country. Has gone on three tours. He has returned the last time with PTSD. He works as a nurse at a local hospital. He says it helps him cope with the horrors. She asked me why he liked me. I told her that his father was very abusive to him and his mother. She smiled, "Did he back away?" I growled, "He ran and called my dad. He asked my dad to punish me. He did punish me but not before I took Gus and ran to the next door neighbor. He was a police officer who arrested the creep. He married Gus's mom a few months later. She had two more kids with him. So after that Gus fell in love with me. My family has no shortage of abusive people." I showed her the scars from my dad. She saw the cut on my neck and asked what happened. I told her she is not old enough to know what happened. I turned to see Gus was grinning like a fool. I threw the pillow. He retaliated by beating me in Mortal Kombat. We had dinner and tucked her in bed. We sat down to watch TV and Henry approached us. He asked if what I said about his dad was true and Gus lifted his shirt. Henry's face turned to sadness, "The two of you were victims of monsters now you guys hunt monsters to save people." Gus wrinkled his nose, "Her dad brainwashed us to be like those monsters we just found a way to fight back. That day I would have died but God had other plans. She was punished more than the rest of us. She would get twice the hurt and the moment she had a chance she made them sorry. She cut off her dad's fingers for complying to my dad's wishes to punish her. She was eight years old" Henry smiled, "She is very protective of everyone. She only hurt those who are literally monsters. The kind the law protects. She had insisted on self defense lessons. I never knew why she would need it till I heard the conversation between her and the ex-husband. How she was assaulted in her apartment. A dirty cop gave her that scar on her neck. I told Dan thinking he didn't know. It turns out she told him everything the day they reunited. She made a genuine effort to keep him happy. After that I taught everything I knew about defense. I am pleased that she chose to be a cop. I still don't understand why her only friend and confident chose to abandon her." Gus gave him a grim expression, "Apple and detective Andropov grew up in the same neighborhood. She grew up having a crush on him. He chose my wife of all the women in New York to marry. This was intolerable to Apple. Then Pam was assaulted. She had to leave because of the dirty cop. Apple thought she had a chance with him. He saw the blood pool and grew what is called a semi conscious and some attachment to Pam. Apple wasted no time trying to win him over. She was rebuked but she never gave up. She seriously believed that she can have a future with him. Then Pam came back. Apple was pushed aside and ignored completely. After Dan's funeral Apple insisted that Pam hide. Pam joined the police academy after Dan's uncle ill treated her. Apple felt she was close to getting him when Pam was assigned to the same police station as him. She was livid. Their paths crossed but each time she was rebuked. Then finally Andropov said to her face that she will never be as good as Pam and that she can try but will never be Pam. This stung so bad that she walked to the police station to have her arrested so that she can try again to win his affection. This was a bust since she was engaged to some guy. I made sure he saw where her heart was. When she confessed her undying love to the detective and made sure her fiance had a front row seat. He heard what she said and walked away. He was so hurt that he swore that he has washed his hands of her and threw her stuff away. She called her lawyer and the dude hung up on her" I interjected, "Her fiance's best friend is her lawyer. He was upset his friend was a cover to get Dimka so he hung up on her" The guys laughed, "Serves her right." Cheryl walked out of her room saying she wasn't sleepy so I got her a glass of milk.
The next day Gus and I figured out who was the killer in the cold cases. He told me to have fun and left for work. I followed the suspect and was about to grab him when Dimka arrested him. I asked him what his problem was. He said that he wants me back. I reminded him that I am once again unavailable. He seemed to be deaf till I repeated what he said to a inform cop the day before. He ignored what I said and repeated that he can help me beat the monster. I appreciated his offer but I told him to get a life. I was walking back to my car when Dimka came after me. He insisted that I go to the station with him. I told that I will go to the precinct but not with him. I got in the car as the others dealt with him. I spent the next few minutes explaining to chief on how I found the guy from the cold case. I deliberately left the part where I was going to eighty six him.
