#26 (I THINK)
NOVEMBER 21, 2022

your girl finally has some time off from work (a glorious three days!) so here i am with an update for this portfolio. most of these graphics i've already posted on my instagram, so they're not necessarily *new*. regardless, i like to keep records.

we'll start with some comic covers i made semi-recently for a comic lotto i held on my instagram

we'll start with some comic covers i made semi-recently for a comic lotto i held on my instagram. i won't go into too much detail with these ones, since i also posted them in my graphic lotto hellions. these first two covers are for binarysun's luke skywalker story, saudade. i tried to honour the illustrated posters of the 70s, when star wars was first released; in this sense, i think these covers are more cinematic than some of my other comic ones. i don't even know what that's meant to mean, to be honest, but in my head it kind of works?

these covers are for sanktham's bruce banner fic, jack of all trades. as with saudade, i've already elaborated upon my process (or lackthereof) in hellions.

onto some stuff i made for myself

onto some stuff i made for myself. this cover/graphic/gif thing is for my drafted spencer reid fic, descansos... i don't have much to say about this, nor much to say about the fic (much to my best friend kat's chagrin, but it's the truth 😭😭). i initially intended to superimpose a drawing i did of the love interest's faceclaim (adria arjona) over this image of matthew gray gubler, but it just did not work.

instead i went for whatever this is 🤨🤨 i still got to do a little bit of drawing, and i also got to practice handwriting title treatments again. followers of this portfolio will know that i do not particularly enjoy writing titles by hand, but i'm slowly getting used to it.

i don't really like this graphic as a cover, so for now it'll remain this cute little gif-y thing. the concept makes a lot of sense for the story, since spencer's love interest nina is an artist (forger, cough cough.) maybe i'll try again in the future.

we've seen the comic cover for telomere before, but here it is along with the regular, mostly non-comic cover

we've seen the comic cover for telomere before, but here it is along with the regular, mostly non-comic cover. i went into this one with an actual vision, for once, and for the most part it went the way i planned.

inherently, telomere is a cosmic horror, and the core of that horror is being completely, totally lost in space. that's what i tried to evoke with this cover; that sense of loneliness and isolation. there's an implicit beauty in stars, and the night sky, but for the cover i wanted the stars to only make that feeling of inevitability and unknown stronger. that's why there are no galaxies, or anything pretty and colourful. it's just dozens of tiny stars, nondescript and far, far way.

my initial cover had no-one in it. kyle was nowhere to be seen; it was literally just the title, the subtitle, the byline and the stars. it felt a little too empty, though, which is why i ultimately decided to add kyle. he's tiny in the scheme of things, and the way he's been positioned is somewhat ambiguous. is he coming to save you? or is he just as lost as you are?

or is he just vibing 🙏🙏 who knows.

hee hee hee. let's play a game: guess who, even though she has time off, even though she has stories she knows she needs to update, decided to instead draft an entirely new fic?

in the woods somewhere is a maybe-upcoming barbara gordon fic. i made these covers just today, to establish mentally for myself the fic's general aesthetic. as you guys might've guessed, i often run on vibes and vibes alone. the vibes, in this case, are somewhat immaculate. it seems i can't write a dc/gotham city-based fic without it being super dark, super depressing, and super death-centric; in the woods somewhere is the latest in a long line of batfamily fics i've written with green as its main colour and death/decay as its main focus.

should probably unpack that, but not right now! this fic's protagonist is in academia, so for the non-comic/regular cover i wanted something that reflected that. incorporating scientific illustrations was good for square one, but i wanted something a little less conventional. i ended up choosing the (de)composition notebook cover because 1) i love decomposition notebooks, and b) making the cover as teddy's research notes was a cool idea. i'm sure that you can tell by the blood splatters, this story is definitely not sunshine and rainbows.

as for the comic cover—in my opinion, it's a little mid 😐 i really wanted to get a general concept down, as well as test the psd colouring before i start making moodboards. i don't think this cover is bad by any means, but i definitely would call it uninspired. you win some, you lose some.

rambling over. thank you so much for checking out this update, and tolerating my borderline essay-writing! i hope everyone has a great week!
