ELAINE WATSON WAS THE SWEETHEART OF SMALL HEATH. There wasn't a soul she couldn't comfort, a frown she couldn't fix. There were many, many deplorable things to hate about Birmingham, but Ellie Watson was not one of them.
When the war had began, even though she was still a child, Ellie trained as a nurse and volunteered as much as she could, doing her part. All 3 of the Shelby boys from down the street were fighting, with their pals Freddie Thorne and Danny Owen (Danny Whizz-Bang they called him). Even her brother, Benjamin, was going his part. But sadly, like the Garrison Boys, after France Benjamin wasn't the boy who left his sister behind, but a man who couldn't figure out how to run from his memories.
And so, while her brother nearly drank himself to death every other night, Ellie worked, trying to support their small family and keep their life together. She negotiated her way into working as a barmaid with another young woman who was also desperate for money. And when that young woman left, Ellie practically ran the Garrison with Arthur Shelby, who was left in charge of it.
Ellie had her life planned out, and as much as she hated it, it was what she had to do. It wasn't like she could be a Peaky Blinder, and her brother was in no state to be a part of the gang either. But nevertheless, the Shelby Company Limited was growing in power, and numbers. The appeal of money, and women, and influence was drawing in boys from all over. Including a young man named Michael Gray, who had been gone from Birmingham for a very long time.
Michael was quiet, and smart, and quickly became Ellie's friend. They were two lost kids, the last hope for their withering families, and caught in the middle of an ongoing war. But through it all, the two found themselves drawn to each other despite hardships and suffering.
But even then, love isn't meant to blossom in the dirt of Small Heath. A lesson Michael and Ellie had to learn the hard way...

notes - this book is back! i missed ellie and michael soo much but i did change the plot up a bit just because this version is just better imo
