chapter 5 - a little help from my friends
AFTER WHAT FELT LIKE FOREVER, ELLIE COULD FINALLY WORK AGAIN. She still had a few days before the Garrison was completely repaired, but in complete honesty, the anticipation of being back behind that bar counter was killing her. Ellie missed working, and seeing her friends and just being the barmaid. She was looking forward to working more than anyone she had ever known.
Ellie walked in after Tom, the night that the pub was reopening. The still had a few hours before people would begin arriving. A decorator pulled down a brown tarp that revealed a shelf in the shape that made Ellie think of a carousel, glittered with golden paint and new bottles of booze to replace the ones that were lost. The whole bar had been drowned in gold, furnished with a bright crimson Tommy had no doubt picked himself. The once straight and narrow bar-top had a round shape to it, and in the back was more tables, couches, a poker area and a piano.
"What do you think?" he asked, as she ran her fingers along the wooden surface of the bar.
She smiled it him. "It's great, Tom! Very gold. I like it. And it smells much better."
He chuckled. "Yeah, I wouldn't get used to that. I've gotten a few extra girls to come and help you tonight, that ok?"
"Sure," she replied. She knew it was going to be all hands on deck, since Tommy had predicted this party to be quite large. "Is Arthur coming?"
