ELLIE WOKE UP WHEN A BANGING SOUND CAME TO HER FRONT DOOR. Ben had still been out job hunting for about a week, and Ellie was trying to mentally prepare for her dinner date with Allen. She wiped her eyes and groggily opened the door to see Arthur, his arms wrapped around her brother. The eldest Shelby had a smile on his face, but some cuts and bruises framing the knuckles that clutched to Ben's shoulder. The two were laughing as if their friendship was never put on any sort of halt. As if they were actually close to one another.
"Are you just getting up now?" Ben asked, motioning to her raggedy robe and nightgown. "It's practically noon, Ellie!"
"It is not! And what are you doing up? Almost never see you up before daybreak." She turned her attention over to Arthur, nodding her head towards his fists and then to the cut on his lip. "How was your trip, boss?"
"Ah, it was amazing. I showed those Southerners how things get done in Birmingham!" he exclaimed.
She smiled at him, his childish excitement as a reaction to something so obviously having to do with violence. "I'll bet you did. Ben, I'm going to go make breakfast. You want something or did you eat?"
Ben shook his head. "No, I can't stay. Afraid I've got to get to work now." His lips turned up in a smile, and he began to laugh. Ellie joined him happily, running into the street and giving her brother a hug in her nightgown and robe.
