chapter 23: marius's opportunity

~marius~

I have a few minutes before my class begins, so I decide to spend my time texting Fawn. It's either that or just sit in silence, so it's obvious what the better choice is. I might feel a bit clingy to Fawn at this point, but I feel like I would miss him too much if I didn't text him at all while I was at school.

After all, I'm here for about six hours, plus the forty-five minute drive here and then another forty-five minutes back. Sure, it was a lot quicker journeying to the school when I was going for my bachelor's because I lived in the city, but I actually enjoy living in Port Orthos a lot more. I'd take the longer commute if it means continuing to live there.

Huxley enters the classroom and walks over to me, sitting down in the spot beside me. He tries to look at my phone to see who I'm texting, but I angle it so he can't see. "Oh, come on," Huxley says. "I just want to see who you're texting."

"You don't even know who it is," I say. "Seeing the name isn't going to change anything."

"So it isn't a girlfriend?" Huxley asks. "And before you say anything, yes, I know you said last time I asked that you don't have a girlfriend, but that doesn't mean things could have changed since then."

I mean, Huxley is right, in a way. The only difference is that it's a boyfriend, not a girlfriend. And since having a boyfriend, being attracted to men, is still very new to me, I'm not sure if I want to tell Huxley the truth.

So I just tell Huxley the partial truth. "It's not a girlfriend. I don't have one."

"So... It's just someone you like, then," Huxley says.

I furrow my eyebrows as I look at him. "Why do you assume that?"

Huxley snorts a laugh. "Because of the way you're smiling at your phone. Only people who are dating someone or likes someone smiles at their phone like that." Huxley props his elbow up on his desk and rests his chin in the palms of his hands. "So what's she like?"

"None of your business," I say, though if I wanted him to stop questioning me, I probably should have just told him that I don't like anyone romantically. I doubt he would have believed me, so maybe it wouldn't have made much of a difference.

Huxley sighs. "Fine, fine. I won't press you for an answer."

"Yeah, you will," I say. "You're probably going to complete forget this conversation and just ask again soon."

       "Nope, I promise, I won't."

I just go back to texting Fawn, but I still make sure to keep my phone angled away from Huxley. Even though he said he's not going to press me for an answer, I know he will at least try to see who I'm texting.

I can't help but smile at the text Fawn sent. He's not just extremely helpful towards humans; he's extremely helpful towards animals as well. I guess he's just one of those people whose name really suits their characteristics.

I take one glance at Huxley and see that he's struggling to say something. I sigh. "What is it now?"

Huxley shakes his head. "I promised I wouldn't press you for an answer. Don't trick me into saying anything similar to it."

I furrow my eyebrows, but then I realize he probably wants to say something about me smiling at my phone again. If only Huxley realized that it wasn't a women I'm texting. If he guessed it was a man, I might be more comfortable to admit it since it shows that he normalizes it, but so far, he's just thinking in a heteronormative way.

Huxley does keep his promise of not pressing me for an answer as to who I'm texting, but it does help him that the professor soon shows up to start the class. Huxley doesn't typically talk to other people during class, so it's unlikely he'll keep asking me.

At the end of the class, my professor announced something that piqued my interest. Apparently, after the next midterm, the current top four students of the class will get the opportunity to work a paid internship for six months at a company started by an alumni of this school.

That is definitely something I need. I still have been trying so hard to find a job, but I haven't been able to find anything. While this will help me for six months, it might also help to add it on my resume afterwards.

Unfortunately, there are quite a few people in this class, so I have to be at the very top to get the internship. We don't even know who's currently at the top of the class. Huxley asked our professor, but she refused to tell us.

The next midterm is two weeks away, so I'm going to have to make sure I continue working my ass off in hopes that I get the internship.

When I'm finally able to head home after one other class, I decide that I want to go to Fawn's house right away. Like I normally do when I get home from school. I get some food through a drive through when I'm close to entering Port Orthos first so I can eat dinner as soon as I get to Fawn's house.

Fawn's already home when I get there, eating dinner on the couch as he watches TV. He smiles at me when I walk inside, and I smile back at him. "How was school?" Fawn asks when he finishes the bite he took.

"It was good." I take off my shoes and walk over to him, kissing his forehead before I sit down beside him. "My professor told us that after the next midterm in two weeks, the top four students will get to do a paid internship at a company."

       "Marius, that's great," Fawn says.

"It is," I say. "But nobody knows who the current top students are."

"I'm sure you're one of them. You're an extremely hard worker, you never procrastinate your schoolwork, and you always put everything you've got in it. Quite frankly, I'd be surprised if you weren't one of the top students."

I smile at Fawn's faith in me. Part of me is worried I won't get the internship, but there's no point in worrying about it. The only thing I can do is continue putting all my effort into my schoolwork and hope for the best.
