"Yeah, my head still hurts a bit but I'm okay!" Luigi reassured his brother. It had been a month since the incident, Luigi had woken up from his coma 2 days ago and had just gotten out of the hospital. Mario had been catering to Luigi's every need, doing everything in his power to make sure his brother feels better and safe again, despite Luigi constantly telling him there's no need for it.
"Are you positive? You know you can be honest with me right? I can cook you breakfast! You want some breakfast?" Mario once again sped-spoke in worry.
"Mario calm down. I'm fine, I'm okay I promise." Luigi sighed. "Although breakfast would be nice... but you don-"
"Okie-Dokie! I'm making you breakfast!" Mario cut him off without hesitation.
"No Mario." Luigi laughed with loving concern. "You don't have to make anything. I can do it myself."
"Nooo sir! You just woke up from a coma! You're gonna relax and let me take care of you!"
"*sigh* Mario, you always do this when I get hurt." Luigi showed disapproval on the outside, but on the inside his heart was warmed up to the fact Mario wanted to care for him so much. This was common, and Luigi's "conscience" continues to tell him that it's because this isn't normally what Mario, or anyone, would do for him. He's only "the second player," "the sidekick." "The backup for Mario's mistakes," or "the REASON for Mario's mistakes," Luigi's always been ridiculed by everyone in the kingdom because he was deemed "less important" than Mario. Mario knew this, he hated it, with a burning passion. He knew a lot about the bullying, the disregarding, and Luigi's low self-esteem...
The only thing he was unaware of was the voice in Luigi's head.
"You sure you'll be alright doing this?" Mario had asked with caution. It was the start of the second week after Luigi's recovery, Mario was still slightly paranoid. Today, Princess Peach had gathered everyone who was remotely involved in the incident to take a visit to New Donk City and patch things up between them. Daisy was hesitant, but she agreed just to hear Pauline beg for mercy. Mario agreed because the two needed to have a personal talk. Peach also invited Luigi, but he had the biggest choice of joining or staying. Pauline had left a personal scar on Luigi, now he fears her, they all knew that.
"I-It won't be as relaxing if I'm n-not there in person. And I know none of you would get the s-satisfaction." Luigi replied. As much as he hated to admit it, Mario knew that was the truth.
"Okay, but if you ever feel uncomfortable, just tell me okay? You don't have to be there any longer than you want to be."
Luigi sighed. "I know Mario. C-can we just get this over with?"
He's scared. Mario thought to himself. I've got to be by his side at all times. At least until it's over.
About 15 minutes later the group had met up at a cafe near the end of Toad Town. Peach and Daisy bought everyone a refreshing drink to keep the tension down before arriving. Mario sat next to Peach, holding her hand and reminding her how much he loved her. It was both the truth and a tactic to calm her down from the things Pauline said. Luigi rested his head on Daisy's shoulder, feeling love just from the warm embrace of her welcoming hug. She held him there, comforting him and making sure he felt safe. Daisy had become a little worried he was scared of both her and Pauline. Luigi had seen Daisy fight before, even more extreme than this, he's seen her when she's angry. He knew in his heart that she would never hurt him on purpose, he knew that for everyone he loved. She knew he knew, but she always wanted to make sure.
"You feeling okay, Sweetie?" Daisy had asked her green lover.
"I'm alright Dais, I missed you." Luigi replied, semi-asleep from Daisy's soft and calming voice. She would do that when she wanted Luigi to feel safe in her arms or when he was tired. She beamed.
"Aww, I missed you too. I'm glad your wounds are healing."
"Yeah they're getting better. Dr. Mario is really good at what he does. I'm really happy he's my cousin."
"You're really happy you have anyone you love." Daisy giggled.
"Well yeah, how could I not?" Luigi chuckled. They laughed at each other. Mario and Peach smirked and smiled at each other. The quartet finished their drinks and had a nice conversation.
It was time to confront Pauline.
