the rest of the concert was simultaneously the best and the most torturous hour of amy's life in a long time. her fever never settled, her blood didn't cool; she was stuck in a ball of desperate lust from the first song until the end. her eyes were fixed on the hedgehog wandering the stage, the music and shadow's voice was a deadly combination when it came to her faltering self-control.
when the band gave their final bows and slipped off stage, the lights in the stadium turning back on, amy could at last draw enough breath to fill her lungs.
she felt someone nudge her arm. she turned her dazed body to see wave the swallow smirking at her. "see? they're fucking amazing, right?"
amy was about to respond, but swallow was already turning away to talk to her hawk friend. there was an excited murmur spreading through the crowd, her fellow fans around her whispering that the stadium's staff was telling everyone to hang around, that team dark would be doing signings that night, a short meet-and-greet event with the whole band.
amy's heart stuttered and skipped, that warm coal reigniting in her core, gentler than the wave of lust but no less overwhelming. she could . . . meet . . .
but she couldn't. this was no place for amy. the exit sign glowed so bright, a lifeline in the dark. she should go home.
amy turned to the other doorway where most of the crowd was headed, all of them chattering about what they would have team dark sign. she stood for a moment, looking back and forth between the exit and the room shadow was apparently in.
she'd had a lovely time already. she could just leave, tuck her concert outfit away, wipe the makeup from her face, and tell cream all about how lovely the band was the one and only time she ever went to see them. it was a good night, and she'd already had more fun than she deserved.
leaving would've been simple. but it had been so long since her heart had come to life for something new. in that moment, it was tugging hard at her, straining to meet the hedgehog that had captivated her so. even if only for a few seconds, one fan out of hundreds, anonymous, simple. amy could be satisfied with that.
for the past few years, her heart had been beating for her friends, never for herself. but right then, her racing pulse was all her own, and heavens above, she wanted to know where it would lead her.
she turned away from the exit, taking her place in line and trying to calm her frayed nerves.
