Arno and Victoria walked around until they came across the Marquis. "Ah... You two are just in time for the commencement of my reign." Marquis answer. "(Excuse me?)" Victoria questioned. "Your reign?" Arno questioned.
"As long as there's a Cour des Miracles. we must have a (King of Beggars). Since there seemed to be vacancy. I stepped in." Marquis answered. Victoria rose a brow up in quite surprise at the Marquis. "With remarkable speed. The body is not yet cold." Arno replied.
"I may have set things in motion a trifle early. Say, when you two first arrived in la Cour des Miracles." Marquis said as he looked up at the duo. "You used us." Arno answered. "Your target is dead? We used one another." Marquis said. Arno and Victoria looked away and saw a goat walking by.
"Quite a kingdom you've inherited." Arno said. "Quite." Victoria said.
"It is, isn't it? So... is justice served? Are the dead avenged, is your souls soothed, all that rot?" Marquis questioned. "Rot is fine description. Every time I think I'm getting close to the truth, it seems another layer of filth presents itself." Arno answer, Victoria sighed.
"Conspiracy! Intrigue! A rapidly-thickening plot! Add some bestiality and a lecherous priest and I'd say you have the beginnings of a beautiful novel." Marquis said. "We'd settle for a solid lead." Arno said.
"So young and yet so serious. Well, best of luck to you." Marquis said.
As Arno and Victoria walked away, "You have, I trust. Looked into these?" Marquis said holding a necklace along with a blade. "Wait..." Arno said. "That's Madeline's mother's necklace." Victoria said in concerned. "Where did you get those?" Arno questioned. "One of my newly loyal subjects brought it to me as a.... token of esteem, as it were, it's a curious piece, I know of only one silversmith who works metal like this. Then a templar dropped the necklace while being chased, you quite lucky that it was brought to me." Marquis explained. As Arno snatched the blade out of the Marquis's hand, He placed the necklace into Victoria's hand.
"A blade of this make killed (Mister) De La Serre. I can only assume you know this already. Why didn't you say?" Arno questioned. Victoria stared at the necklace, she remember the first time she saw Madeline's mother had worn it. It's a family heirloom.
"Where would man be if he never had to ask questions? If everything he could ever want to know were simply handed to him? He might no longer think to ask questions." Marquis explained. "Or he might accomplish a great deal more, unburden by ignorance." Arno said, with annoyance. "Perhaps." Marquis said. "Perhaps... all you can say." Victoria mumbled.
"The smith's name is Francois Thomas Germain. You'll find his shop near Les Halles." Marquis said. "Thank you." Arno said while Victoria nodded.
"(Good luck)"
As they were walking, Victoria was looking at the necklace, Arno halted. "Everything alright?" He asked.
"Arno, That necklace was on her mother when she was killed in america, it wasn't on her when she was laid to rest here, how did it get back here?" Victoria asked. Arno looked at her and thought of Madeline, piece of her mother, like his watch is a piece of his father "It belongs back to Madeline, I'll give it to her." Arno said. "Thank you, she'll be happy to have it back." Victoria said. "We should get back to the council." Arno said and Victoria nodded.
..............
Arno and Victoria came up to Mirabeau, who was resting his head. "You look terrible." Arno said to him, Victoria looked at Arno. "For months, I have been wrangling the Brotherhood, The National Assembly and the King. Taken all together they have the political acumen of an especially stupid village council. I believe that excuses my appearance, young man." Mirabeau said to Arno.
"I meant no disrespect, Mentor. I am only.... concerned." Arno said. "Forget me, Arno. Weep for France, but enough politics. I hope you and Ms. Scott have happier news. What of (Lord) De La Serre's murders?" Mirabeau asked.
"The King of Beggars is dead. He was carrying this." Arno said as he lifted up the gun.
"(Rest in Peace)"
"You should keep it. It'll do no one any good moldering in a forgotten crypt. Carry it with honor."
"Thank you. I will." Arno replied.
"The mission?" Mirabeau asked. "The king of Beggars and Sivert were only pawns in a larger game. Someone sent them after (Mister) De La Serre." Victoria explained. "Templars do nothing simply, do they? Do you two have anything solid on this mysterious chess player?" Mirabeau asked.
"The only lead we have is the instrument that killed De La Serre. A pin fashioned by a silversmith named Germain. But how he's involved, I can't yet say." Arno explained and Victoria nodded.
"It seems your course is clear. Find this silversmith, learn what part he plays. Victoria, get your cheek stitched up and I have a task for you at hand." Mirabeau said. "(Yes Mister)" Victoria said. Arno walked off, "I have to speak to Arno." Victoria said and they nodded at the woman.
Victoria caught up with Arno, "Arno, there you are." Victoria said. "I didn't go very far." Arno said. "About the necklace, I know Madeline is going to ask questions. Answer them but do know the council is going to have to answer her. They have information on her mother, Danelia found that out before she went missing." Victoria said. Arno sighed.
"Why did they keep this from her?" Arno asked. "Not the slightest clue, but she will be frustrated. I think they forget my grandmother Bela, helped out the French Brotherhood, she deserve answers that's for sure." Victoria said. "But I think you might see her soon, give her my regards plus tell her she needs to rest." Victoria said. Arno nodded.
Victoria walked off to a clinic and Arno headed towards sliversmith's place.
...........
Arno then thought back on a memory of him and Madeline.
Madeline made her way to the De la Serre's place. She saw Arno grooming a horse. "Good Afternoon (Mister) Dorian." Madeline said. Arno turned then was left speechless when he saw Madeline in a stunning emerald dress. "You alright?" Madeline asked.
"You look stunning." Arno said. She smiled. "I am still awaiting our cafe dinner." Madeline said. "It will happen soon, I promise." Arno said. "I'm keeping you to that, I am going to speak to De la Serre. Speak to you soon." Madeline said. "You shall." Arno said. She smiled and headed inside.
"I promise, Madeline." Arno said.
