GREY KINGSTON

spencer's voice is garbled over the walkie talkie. with the rain pelting against the roof of the van and the storm disrupting our connection, the static breaks apart every other word making it near impossible to hear what he is saying.

"spencer?"

static, and silence.

i sigh, shaking my head to rick, "i think we lost him."

"it's okay." he runs his warm hand over my knee, letting it rest there. "we'll be home soon."

"can you hear me?" a new voice comes through, clearer than before and my brain pauses for a moment. "grey?"

i lift the walkie closer to my mouth, "daryl?"

rick looks over at me, his eyes tired and strained from driving in the dark and through the pouring rain, but they light up at the sound of daryl's voice.

"don't bother comin' home first, head right for the bridge." daryl says, the static now gone like he must have taken the radio from spencer and walked off somewhere else.

rick motions for me to hand it to him, two swift curls of his fingers in a give it here motion, "what's going on at the bridge?" he asks, one hand on the steering wheel.

"a tree fell, wiped out that portion that was already destroyed, made the gash bigger. if we don't patch it up, shit won't stand a chance."

"and the camp?"

"camp's fine. just a few tents got ripped up and blown away."

"we're about forty minutes south."

"see ya when ya get here."

"daryl," rick stops him from turning off the radio.

"yeah?"

"good to hear your voice, brother."

the radio squelches, and a moment later, daryl responds, "yours too."

rick and i emerge from the van, jackets on and hoods up as we race down the road toward the bridge our people stand on.

"oh, thank god." sasha is the first to notice us, stepping out from the trees that line the camp, and then heads turn. we meet them on what's left of the bridge, the sturdy parts on the right side, and they point it out to us, where the large tree fell and broke the already weak and withered spot into something worse; into something to worry about.

"there's a construction site 'bout thirty minutes from here; wood, slabs of concrete. maybe something in there could be useful." jesus suggests a way to patch it up.
