I'VE BARELY CALMED down from Kenji and I's fun, little trip when I arrive back on base and I feel someone grab my arm from the corner, dragging me down a hallway.

I gasp and only furrow my eyebrows when I realize it's Juliette. Her cheeks are stained with tears and she looks like she's been crying for centuries. She looks half dead, if I'm honest. I'm only happy she's awake.

Instantly, I stop her, hold her at arm's length. Search her face and body for any wounds in case we've been attacked and I haven't been informed yet. "What's going on?" I ask. "What's wrong?"

Juliette releases a sob, clinging to me like a lost child. "I can't—we need—can we go a-away? Run s-somewhere?"

I frown worriedly. I swear to God, if my brother has hurt her

"Yes," I reply. "Yes, of course we can."

Just as we keep running, we spot Kenji and he makes eye contact with me. As if the whole situation wasn't awkward enough, now he has to think that I'm sprinting off to gossip with Juliette. Unless he's seen her crying. It would be pretty hard to miss.

But we scream to a stop when I suddenly bump into someone—Lydia. She's panting, her warm, brown eyes emotional and wild and confused all at once. "Guys," she says breathily.

"Lydia?" I say. "What's going on? What the hell did I miss?"

"You can't go," Lydia says. "Wherever you're going, you can't. Juliette—" But Lydia stops talking and frowns instead. I furrow my own eyebrows and turn my head, only to notice that Juliette has disappeared, probably having run off someplace else.

I should've gone with her but I'm still so confused as to what's going on. "Lydia," I say as I face the brown haired girl again. "Talk to me."

But all Lydia does is swallow and continue to stare at me like she's wondering if I'm real or not. "You're going to need to sit down for this, Florence." And I don't think I've ever seem this girl so serious and worried.

Two hours have passed and my jaw is still hanging.

Apparently, once Kenji and I left for our little trip into the forest, Lydia wanted to hang out with Aaron and Juliette but found them in their room instead, talking seriously. And she ended up eavesdropping on their conversation and found out some things that have left me nearly breathless.

Juliette was adopted. Her real parents are still alive. Her life has been an experiment and so has the life of her very much alive sister. Apparently both were willingly handed over to the Reestablishment for scientific research. And they're coming back for her, for Juliette, and Emmaline—her sister—has been in the Reestablishment's captivity for twelve whole years. Two of which were spent with Aaron torturing her in order to make our father let us stay in Sector 45.
