My heart stops.

"Ollie, sorry, but I can't wait for the subway gotta go"

"But Louise its-"

I start sprinting home before he could finish responding. On the run home my thoughts are racing.

"Should I tell anyone in my family? , Do I still like someone from when I was 14?? , Is he mad at me? , This is just a cruel joke" "I should've responded! Why am I running"

Ignoring the last thought I sped up and began running faster than I've ever ran.

Come on Louise get a hold of yourself!

I manage to run fast enough that I get home in 17 minutes

That might be a record, hah I bet Ollie is still waiting for the subway.

As I begin nearing the restaurant I realize they might wonder why I'm home at 9 am, since school ends at 2:30.

Shit do I go inside the restaurant or go behind and sneak into my room then pretend to come home later.

Fuck it. I'm 19, and I need help. I walk into the restaurant, Tina, and Mom stare at me confused while dad is in the kitchen cooking for the customers without looking up.

"Louise? What are you doing here? Why aren't you at school?" Mom asks

"Why are you so red and sweaty?" Tina asks

"Did you walk home instead of waiting for the subway?, Actually nevermind that why are you home?" Mom asks again.

" I uh, something came up, and I decided to come home early today, also I ran not walked." I respond, panting a little trying to catch my breath, I add, "I can explain later, I think."

Somehow dad ignored everything probably thinking it was a customer or someone mom or Tina knew.

Ding

He rings the bell placing the freshly made burger on the opening sill. Glancing up

"Lin bring this to ta- Louise?"

"Save it we asked all the questions, it wasn't much help." Mom tells him

"Oh uhm also T I need you to come with me please upstairs now please." I tell Tina as I stumble over my words and begin to head out and into our house.

I sit in the living room for about 2 minutes when Tina walks in. I don't say anything to her, I just show her the message. I'm sitting there with my fingers on my chin, resting my head.

I looked at Tina and she looked shocked for a moment. She re-reads it a few times before looking at me

"So what do I do??" I ask her

"Weren't you like in love with him before he moved, if not weren't y'all at least best friends?" She asks in her voice that has progressively gotten less monotone over the years

"Well I uh-.." I say, my voice slowly getting quieter I mutter out "yeah."

"Then tell him you want to meet up at a small cafe in town, figure out why he's back. You've got this." Tina said kind of encouragingly, I think she's still as confused as I am.

"Oh and I gotta get back to the restaurant I'll tell them you can't come down until later." Tina adds

"Thanks T and don't say anything to them please"

"No problem, also I can't keep that promise, but still, text him" she says walking down the stairs to return to the restaurant.

Tina has always been good at things like this, she barley needed to read it, she just had an answer for it

I sit in the living room for a good 10 minutes before I pick up my phone. Shakily I open his message again and begin typing.

"Rudy!" No that's too much..

"Ok, I'll be waiting on the coffee shop in 10 minutes." fuck no, thats too serious.

Agh.

Ok maybe,

"Hey rudes, long time no talk, let's meet up at the coffee shop off of shell shore street, in 10 minutes :)" Ok yeah that's nice, it's not too much, ok Ive got this.

I live 8 minutes away from the coffee shop so I head outside, wave to Tina from the window and start walking.

Tina's POV

"Hey teen can you sweep the floor a little it's looking dirty" Mom asks

"Yeah sure thing!"

"Tee I'm not even sure why you decided to stay, me and your mom got this it'll be less than 4 years and Louise is taking over" Dad says

" I know but I just felt like I should stay, plus buisness has finally started to get serious, there's no longer days where the only customer is teddy and mort" I reply "plus maybe Louise will finally open up again and will need help with boys, or maybe even girls" I add on

"Teen the chance of her opening up is very low, plus we all have smart phones that kind of work she could text you. She let her guard down for someone she really cared for and he just leaves, it made her seal up completely again" Mom states

"I mean she still trusts Ollie and maybe Andy. I haven't seen Andy in a while" dad chimes in.

"I feel like I shouldn't be here for this conversation I'm gonna go bobby" Teddy says as he takes the rest of his burger and leaves.

It goes silent for a few minutes after that, until the door bursts open. It's Louise, shes red and sweaty and out of breath.

*The whole conversation from before happens*

Louise walks out of the restaurant telling me to come with her,

"See mom! I was right!" I say with a little sarcastic pettiness in my voice

Mom mumbles mockingly as a response.

I head into the house and see Louise sitting in the living room, she doesn't say a word she just turns her phone towards me I gasp a little at what I see.

*The whole other conversation between Tina and Louise happens again*

I walk back into the restaurant with mom and dad staring at me

"So what was wrong" they ask almost at the same time

"I don't think I should say I kind of promised I wouldn't" I say back

Tee, it seemed serious, plus no offense but you kind of suck at secrets" dad states

"Uhhhhhhhgh... FINE! It's Rudy, he's back"

Mom and dad both stare at me before mom says

"That little no good, daughter breaking, asthma having, kiddy.. kid kid"

"Uh yeah what she said" dad joins in

"I know we all blame him for breaking her, but maybe it wasn't his fault, I mean he was 14" I say back trying to calm mom down

"I think we need to have a family conference about this with Louise, someone call Gene" Bob says

I don't know why they always insist on getting involved with our personal lives, it might be a reason why Louise doesn't open up.
