Although debut may be my least favourite of Taylor's albums, that doesn't mean I don't love it.
To me, debut perfectly encapsulates the feeling of being a teenager and not knowing where you want to go next in life, a feeling I know all too well. There are songs about feeling lost, songs about feeling invisible to someone even though you see them in your mind wherever you go. It is a perfect representation of what being a teenager and growing up is like, which fearless builds on.
Debut to me is like standing at a crossroads, not knowing which direction to go. It is standing by a lake, staring at your reflection, and wondering who that person is, who they will become in the future. It is the feeling that no one fully understands who you are, whilst knowing that you're not sure who you are either. It is learning to understanding the difference between what you want and what you need.
In my mind, debut is Taylor at her most free. She isn't afraid to name people in her songs, she doesn't yet feel the restraints and restrictions of the industry telling her what she can and can't say. I don't think Taylor felt this free again until Lover, when she began to own her own music. And you can hear this freedom in the songs.
Country music has never been my favourite, but when Taylor does it I can't help but love it. And that's why debut will always have a place in my world.
