CHAPTER THIRTEEN

━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━

The sun radiated its warmth upon the Mushroom Kingdom, casting a golden glow over its lively landscapes. Mario and Luigi, the dedicated custodians of the kingdom, diligently embarked on their usual rounds. Week after week, they meticulously inspected the intricate web of pipes, ensuring their seamless operation throughout the realm of fungi and mystery. Yet, an unspoken tension seemed to linger in the atmosphere on this particular day, a tension that Luigi's perceptive senses picked up on. Sensing his brother's distraction, Luigi made up his mind to unravel the enigma that was clearly burdening Mario's thoughts.

"Hey, bro, what's got you looking so serious?" Luigi playfully nudged his slightly shorter sibling, playfully capturing his attention. A reassuring smile danced on Luigi's lips as he maintained a light-hearted demeanor, aiming to alleviate the apparent unease. "You seem quieter than usual. Is something bothering you?"

Mario let out a sigh, recognizing the need to address the incident he witnessed involving Luigi and [name] at the library. However, anxiety gripped him, fearing the potential consequences of his actions. He yearned to express his concerns without undermining Luigi's trust or judgment.

The idea of [name] becoming closely intertwined with his brother's life unsettled Mario deeply. Conflicted by the steadfast faith others seemed to place in her, especially given her evasive explanations, Mario found himself torn. Despite his desire to extend the benefit of the doubt, his intuition persistently nudged him toward hidden truths, a rare dissonance for him.

"There's something I need to talk to you about, but I want you to promise me that you won't get angry," Mario finally mustered the courage to address Luigi, his hands finding refuge in the pockets of his iconic overalls. Raising an eyebrow, Luigi wondered at the unusual request from his brother. Unyielding in his affection for Mario, Luigi's love for his older brother surpassed any potential cause for discord. However, the somber expression on Mario's face indicated the gravity of the matter, prompting Luigi to engage earnestly. "Of course, bro. I could never be mad at you."

A brief pause settled between them as Mario, pinching the bridge of his nose, exhaled a slow, deliberate breath. "Yesterday, I saw you getting pretty close with [name] at the library. Care to fill me in on that?"

Luigi seemed taken aback by Mario's tone. A faint blush colored his cheeks, and he quickly sought to defend himself, "Listen, Mario... I know you have reservations about [name], but I believe she deserves a chance." He fiddled with the toolbelt hanging from his waist, a hint of anxiety in his movements. "She wanted to learn more about the conflict between the Mushroom Kingdom and the Darklands, and she and wants to help fight for our cause! She even expressed interest in joining our training sessions. Isn't that-"

"Luigi," Mario interjected, "you're only reinforcing my concerns."

"Do you really think she's working for Bowser? I get that you're cautious, given everything that's happened in the past few months, but... but I want to place my trust in [name]. She's been nothing but kind since she arrived, and she hasn't given us any reason to doubt her!" Luigi's defense of [name] was swift, yet Mario remained resolute.

"We hardly know anything about her! She's been incredibly vague about her background, and her 'memory loss' seems to conveniently kick in when we start asking too many questions. Her companion is a Shy Guy, for crying out loud! Are you seriously ignoring all these warning signs?"

The two brothers locked eyes, a silent clash of determination unfolding as their brows furrowed and frustration tinted their cheeks. Luigi sensed the trajectory of their conversation, a growing unease settling within him.

An internal struggle began - his logical side urging him to back down, to let Mario maintain his usual upper hand in their unspoken power dynamic, an effort to diffuse the mounting tension. Yet, his heart, that stubborn, quiet chamber of his being, refused to yield without a fight.

Weariness colored his emotions, weariness from a long history of submission, from the habit of keeping his thoughts unvoiced for the sake of his elder brother. While his love for Mario remained unwavering, an indomitable voice demanded recognition of his autonomy, of the legitimacy of his convictions.

In that moment, the existence of his own thoughts, his personal bonds beyond Mario, merged into a symbol of resilience: [name], his confidante, his friend.

"Mario, I... believe in [name]. She's... she's my friend," Luigi began, his words laced with a gentleness that unveiled his vulnerability and underscored his determination. He braced himself to meet Mario's gaze, a gaze colored by complex emotions. "I'm not saying you have to trust her... you don't even have to like her! But... I want you to trust me and my decision to trust her."

His older brother wrestled with his emotions, an internal turmoil beneath his outward facade. Heavy with uncertainty, ]a sigh laden with theatrics, escaped Mario's lips. "Alright," his response carried a touch of bitterness, "Alright, I'll trust you. I might not be thrilled about it, but..." His sentence trailed off, unfinished, as he carefully weighed his words. A hand found its way to his temple. "Luigi, you've got a heart that's bigger than the world itself. A heart that spreads kindness without reservation. But this world...it's not deserving of that kindness, and [name] isn't an exception to that. However, I'll make an effort to see what you see in her. For your sake."

Expectation hung thick as the air absorbed his words. And unsurprisingly, Luigi's response was immediate. He enveloped his brother in a hug, a wordless embrace that conveyed gratitude, comprehension, and forgiveness all at once.

A sigh of acceptance escaped Mario's lips, finding solace against Luigi's shoulder. He returned the embrace, though his surrender was reluctant. "I apologize for being so hard on both you and [name]," he conceded, a quiet admission of fallibility, "You do know, that I'm just doing what an older brother does, right? Watching out for you... it's part of the job description."

A tender smile curved Luigi's lips, "I know, Mario," Luigi affirmed, his voice bearing a depth of conviction. "I know."
