As a woman, you're taught to go to school,
study hard, test well, and go to more schools (ex: College)
then find a decent man, get married
have a couple of kids
and what's next?
They don't tell you the rest of the story.
Instead of trying to find yourself during a midlife crisis,
one should determine their journey.
I tried doing everything by "The Book" to gain the love of my family.
That didn't work.
I studied and worked hard all through school
that didn't work.
I stood at the top of my class
I got into college.
Somehow, I still didn't get the love I wanted so desperately.
I tried, and I mean tried to be the straight girl and suppress
any desires I had for women,
because I knew that would destroy my relationship with my mother.
All that time had passed, and it took me years to realize
real love is unconditional
and while playing make-believe
gives us drive
it doesn't give us the happiness we seek to fill that void.
Be you,
unapologetically.
and once you love oneself
someone will show you the love
you always needed.
