storm breaking

She rolled her sleeves up to her elbows, squaring her shoulders. Her face was hard, her gaze steely and dangerous. Hair pulled back tightly behind her head, hands curled into fists. Her whole body was tense, prepared for a fight.

Percy leaned casually against the tree behind him, crossing his arms. He fought the smirk that crept up his face, biting the inside of his cheek. At nineteen years old, Annabeth was the most skilled fighter at Camp Half-Blood. This guy didn't stand a chance.

Annabeth's adversary, as competent or powerful as he was, was absolutely getting his ass beat, and Percy would watch. He didn't really like to get between his girlfriend and her opponent, unless he felt it necessary. He'd much rather keep his body mostly intact, thank you.

The whole thing was a little silly, if he was honest. Leon Sebastian, a son of Hebe, had insulted a young daughter of Athena, Maya Reichvelle. Annabeth, who had become an honorary Athena among the demigods of Cabin 6, had come immediately to her little sister's defense. Long story short, it had escalated and led to a duel.

Truthfully, Percy didn't think that the insult was the entire reason why. He loved kids, and would gladly fight anyone that hurt one, but he also knew Annabeth was smarter than to start fights for small issues. Leon too, he was a relatively smart guy and though he had a temper, he rarely fought someone out of spite. The two had been beefing for weeks, and Percy imagined that this was the tipping point. Little little things had piled and this was the perfect excuse to fight it out.

Percy's gaze flickered to Leon, on the other end of the arena, who cracked his knuckles and snatched up his sword. Annabeth unsheathed her knife, the blade gleaming. For a moment only, they waited for the other to strike first, before Annabeth slashed at him, beginning the duel.

The son of Hebe was strong, his eyes sharp and calculating. He timed his strikes well, and he didn't tire. Percy had trained this guy, and he was good. One of the best in camp.

Annabeth was a stroke of lightning. Her knife flashed in the sun, her feet dancing across the sandy ground. She never aimed at the same place twice, landing blows where Leon didn't expect her to.

Percy watched as her lithe arm extended to slash at her opponent. Hard muscle flexed beneath her skin, her body strengthened by over a decade of training.

Blonde curls whipped in the air, glinting gold. Her gray eyes were narrowed in concentration, keeping her gaze fixed on Leon and his sword.

The guy was good, Percy had to give him that. But against Annabeth? He was done for before he even started. She struck at him, over and over again. He barely was able to counter her attacks, much less land one of his own. In all honesty, it was sad, almost.

Maya stood next to him, taking in the whole thing. She tilted her small face upwards to meet his, her gray eyes big.

"She won't.. kill him, right?"

Percy laughed softly. "No, definitely not." Maya nodded, turning her gaze back to the duel. Annabeth had backed Leon into the edge of the arena, her knife holding his sword firmly in place. She snarled a few words in his face, and eventually he accepted defeat.

The daughter of Athena stalked to the entrance of the arena, sheathing her knife and wiping sweat from her brow. Gods, she was gorgeous. Her gray eyes still flashed with storms, but a smirk played on her lips. Maya rushed up to her, and she scooped the younger girl into her arms. After a minute, she put the girl back onto the ground, and stroked her hair before making her way to Percy.

"Hey Wise Girl," he said, letting his face slip into a smile.

"Seaweed Brain." she answered, resting her head on his shoulder. He put his arm around her shoulder and she relaxed into him.

"Had fun?" he asked after a moment.

"Beat his ass." she muttered.

"Oh yeah, we noticed."

She hummed a noise of agreement. "Let's go, I don't wanna hang around here."

"Of course, let's go." he let his arm slip from her shoulder and took her hand, leading them towards the strawberry fields.
