Nico spread his hand and ran it over the dark soil. He glanced up at his sister, her thick eyebrows raised.
"Find anything?" she asked.
He nodded mutely. "Yeah. The dead are strong here." Hazel dropped into a crouch beside him, and placed her hand on the ground as well. She nodded, impressed.
"Good dirt." she said, eyes glimmering. Nico felt his mouth slide into a grin. A sharp howl cut through the cold air.
"Looks like they're catching up."
"Finally." He lifted his hands from the ground, and the earth began to crack and split. Skeletons clawed to the surface in the dozens, grasping at grass and rocks for purchase.
Hazel laughed, and ran her hand over the ground in a circle, precious stones rising in her wake. They sprang together, fusing into fist sized masses of jagged edges.
Thundering paws entered Nico's earshot, and he drew his sword. Next to him, Hazel did the same, her golden blade illuminating her face.
The monsters finally appeared, a mishmash of Greek beasts. Nico thrust his arm towards them, and the skeleton army he had amassed cascaded towards them like a tidal wave, their speed terrifying. He faded into the darkness, reforming behind a centaur to slash it across the legs.
Hazel, a dozen yards away, snatched one of the jewel clumps and threw it into the air, using her wide blade as a baseball bat. She slammed the jewels with her sword in midair, and it buried itself in the gut of a cyclops. Her hand flicked upwards, and the ball of stones made its reappearance, breaking through the mouth of the beast. It exploded into dust with a roar of pain.
A thick mist fell across the horde, rendering Nico deaf and unable to see past half a foot in front of him. He swung his sword wildly, but something caught his blade. Hazel appeared beside him, her sword blocking his.
"Hey Nico,"
He dropped his arm, relaxing slightly. "Oh, it's you."
"Of course." she replied. She grabbed his wrist, and suddenly he could see again. The monsters lashed at each other, blinded and confused. Every time one would come near them, a jagged spire of stone erupted from the ground, embedding itself in the flesh of the beast.
Nico couldn't resist a smile. "Woah."
Hazel beamed, but didn't turn her gaze from the battlefield. She reached a hand out and gripped something invisible, before jerking sharply upwards. Her other arm swayed lazily, slender fingers dancing in the air. He watched a centaur club a dracaena, her cries of pain eerily similar to those of Hazel's.
"Are you... can you make them hear things too?"
"Yep. All of them think they're killing one of us."
The son of Hades shook his head in amazement. "Remind me to never mess with a Hecate kid."
"Of course, brother."
