"Hey, Paul?" Percy's voice called from behind the door.
"Yeah? You can come in." he answered, spinning around in his chair. His stepson appeared from behind the door, peeking his head in before entering.
"Come." Paul said, beckoning him forward. "Do you need anything?"
Percy shook his head, and looked at the ground bashfully. "I... I just wanted to give you something." he pulled a hand-sized box from behind his back and placed it awkwardly in his hands. The wrapping paper was covered in little penguins wearing Santa hats. "I was gonna give it to you on Christmas, but it felt super lame so here, I guess. Um, but that's not what I came here for."
"Sit down then." Paul gestured at another chair, and Percy tucked himself onto it before speaking again.
"I just wanted to thank you, for everything. My mom really loves you and you've been really nice to me even though we've only known each other for a few years and I went missing and all that stuff. You got me into Goode and even though I got kicked out I lasted longer than any other school ever, so thank you."
He was stunned by the sudden sentiment, and since he didn't say anything, Percy continued. "You were really caring and nice when I got back and was a complete wreck, and you took really good care of me and my mom at the same time these last few months. I was a mess and couldn't really get my thoughts right in my head for a while but you were still really nice and I really really appreciate that. And my mom deserves the world, and she cares about you a lot and she's happy about this life with you. So thanks for making my mom happy too."
Paul placed a gentle hand on Percy's knee, pleased to see that he didn't flinch from his touch. He looked into his step-son's eyes as he spoke. "Of course I take care of you, Percy, you're..." he didn't want to put labels on whatever he had going on with him. Maybe he wouldn't like it and he would get scared off. The poor boy was skittish enough as he was, and the last thing Paul wanted was to force feelings onto him. "You don't have to thank me for all that, Percy. It's nothing, really. I'm just doing my best to make everyone happy. I don't want you or Sally to ever feel uncomfortable in your own house."
Percy nodded, biting back a small smile. "The baby's gonna have the best parents ever."
"And the best big brother." he said teasingly, and Percy flushed.
"I don't know about that. I mean, hopefully I'll be in college which will be great but then I won't get to see them."
"I don't think a little distance will stop you from being the best brother a kid's ever had."
Percy shrugged. "We'll see, I guess." he paused, and then continued as he got up to leave. "Thanks anyway, for everything. I'll see you at dinner."
And then he was gone, only glancing back once as he closed the door softly. Paul snorted, rolling his eyes a little at his abrupt exit. He adjusted his glasses before carefully peeling the tape from the little box. Inside, there was a mug that proudly proclaimed the words 'Best Dad Ever' in black block letters.
He used that mug every single day.
