Chapter 4

The days that followed Lucas's abrupt departure were a whirlwind of emotions for Isabella. She tried to focus on her work at the café and her art, but thoughts of Lucas lingered in the back of her mind like a haunting melody. She found herself constantly checking her phone for messages that never seemed to come.

One evening, as Isabella stood in front of her easel, her paintbrush poised in midair, her phone buzzed on the table. Her heart skipped a beat as she reached for it, only to see an unfamiliar number.

"Isabella, it's Lucas," the text read. "Can we meet tomorrow? I have something important to discuss."

Isabella's pulse quickened, a mix of excitement and apprehension washing over her. She quickly typed out her reply, agreeing to the meeting.

The next day, Isabella arrived at the designated café, her nerves tingling with anticipation. She glanced around, spotting Lucas sitting by the window, his expression a mixture of seriousness and determination.

"Isabella," Lucas greeted, his voice warm but laden with a weight that made her heart race.

"Lucas," she replied, taking a seat across from him. "What did you want to talk about?"

Lucas took a deep breath, his gaze locking with hers. "Isabella, there's something I should have told you before. Something that might change how you see me."

Isabella's curiosity piqued, and she leaned forward. "What is it?"

Lucas hesitated, his fingers tapping nervously against the table. "I'm not just a CEO, Isabella. There's more to my life than what meets the eye."

Isabella's brow furrowed in confusion. "What do you mean?"

Lucas took a deep breath, his gaze unwavering. "Isabella, I'm engaged."

Isabella's heart dropped like a stone, the weight of his revelation crashing down on her like a wave. Her mind raced, her emotions in turmoil as she tried to process his words.

"I didn't want to hide it from you," Lucas continued, his voice tinged with regret. "But things were complicated, and I didn't know how to tell you."

Isabella felt a knot tighten in her chest, a mixture of hurt and anger bubbling to the surface. She had let herself become vulnerable, had allowed herself to believe that their connection was special, only to be confronted with the harsh reality of Lucas's engagement.

"I understand if you're angry," Lucas said softly, his eyes filled with regret.

Isabella's voice was barely a whisper as she replied, "I thought we had something real."

Lucas reached across the table, his hand hovering over hers. "Isabella, our connection is real. But I should have been honest from the beginning."

Tears pricked at the corners of Isabella's eyes, her heart torn between the disappointment of dashed hopes and the lingering feelings that still tugged at her.

As their hands remained suspended in the air, their fingers almost touching, Isabella found herself at a crossroads. The connection they had shared was undeniable, yet the unexpected twist of Lucas's engagement cast a shadow of doubt over everything.

And as they sat in that café, the silence between them spoke volumes, leaving Isabella to grapple with the emotions that swirled within her.
