"Hey, Aki, where are you going?"

I looked down and closed my eyes upon hearing Kuya Callisto. I was about to leave — Not because I have new cases to work on, but because of my father. Father texted me kasi kanina lang na may family dinner kaming tatlo later, kaya wala ako gano'ng mood now. Naiirita lang siguro ako kasi I know for years, all I ever did was to please him. And all those years, I couldn't even get his attention.

Puro na lang Callisto.

Dad

: We'll have dinner tonight.

Nakakasawa pala mabuhay para sa iba.

"Work," I answered.

Kuya Cal stood in front of me with a confused expression plastered on his, asking, "Work? Didn't Dad tell you about the dinner we were going to have later?"

Oh, he did inform me about that.

"Kaka-text niya lang. Alis muna ako, I have to work talaga." Lalagpasan ko na sana siya pero hinawakan niya bigla ang braso ko at iniharap ulit sa kanya. "Ano ba, Kuya?"

"What's up with you, Aki?" His eyebrows creased as he asked. "Are you okay?"

Am I?

"I'm okay, Kuya," I answered him without hesitation. "So, can you please let go of me na? I have to go to work pa."

Alam kong hindi kasalanan ni Kuya Cal na hindi ako tini-treat ni Dad as his daughter. But, right now... Right now, ewan ko ba. Hindi ko alam kung bakit ako off kay Kuya kahit hindi niya naman kasalanan kung bakit ganito ang treatment sa'kin ni Dad.

"Aki, hey." Tawag niya ulit sa'kin ng bitawan niya ang braso ko kaya napalingon ako, waiting for him to talk. "Text me kapag natapos ka na sa work mo, okay? I'll fetch you, sabay tayong pumunta kay Dad."

The side-walk before that was full of busy people but now it is filled with pairs — friends that are caught up in their conversations, families walking with an air of togetherness between them, and couples that are sharing stolen glances and soft smiles.

As I walked to the sidewalk near our building, holding my briefcase tightly in my right hand, a heavy feeling settled in my chest.
