As of Skylanders Imaginators, there are currently 10 elements, There is the Kaos element but no one really uses or cares for it. The elements are the equivalent of Pokemon types, only no evolutions or cool dual types, unless it's Swap Force but we're not looking at that yet.
For any newcomers to Skylanders and making one, it is best to start off with these, as they are canon and straightforward, yet, depending on the person's creativity, can leave a lot to interpretation, which for once is a good thing.
So here are a couple of brief descriptions of what they are
Water
The first one I personally think is a good starting point for newcomers, is the water element Skylanders tend to be aquatic by nature, meaning they are often sea creatures or can be related to water, such as scuba divers or penguins. However, one exception to water is ice, as it tends to be made of water.
Hint: If you're designing a water Skylander, try doing a sea creature that has not been done before. The sea is already vast, having many creatures that make good inspirations.
Tech
This element is all about mechanical, and metal-like attributes, even cybernetic. That often explains why most of the Skylanders are robots or inventors, and some are even cybernetic in a way.
