As with every new Skylanders game, there tends to be a gimmick, so if you want to make a Skylander based on a canonical gimmick, that is your best bet, as trying to do one with a new gimmick is time-consuming at best.

Here are the main gimmicks of each game...

Cores (Skylanders Spyros Adventure): They are basically Skylanders with no gimmick whatsoever, yet tend to be the easiest to start off with as they offer more leeway to be creative.

Spyro is a core Skylander

Giants (Skylanders Giants): Basically these Skylanders for all intents and purposes are huge, and tend to be strong enough to pull islands or lift boulders.

Tree Rex is a Giant Skylander

Swap Force (Skylanders Swap Force): They are able to swap the lower parts of their bodies with each other, essentially swapping and sharing their skills, while also having dual elements

Blast Zone is a Swap Force Skylander that can Swap with Wash Buckler to make Blaster Buckler, and is now both fire and water.

Trap Masters (Skylanders Trap Team): In a nutshell, they are the Skylander's equivalent of a police force, and all of them have a translucent, almost gem-like appearing weapon, that's their traptanium weapon

Superchargers (Skylanders Superchargers): Basically all these Skylanders are racers, with some familiar faces joining the party, and often have vehicles to join them as well

Hint: I do not recommend you start off with this one if you want to make a new Skylander, just for the simple fact vehicles are hard enough to draw, especially a newcomer

Senseis (Skylanders Imaginators): They supposedly help train new Skylanders you the player just created, and tend to be in certain weapon classes: brawler, while all often wearing a yellow belt.

I'm not counting Imaginators as a gimmick in this situation, because we are her to make original concepts, not use already given assets.
