"y/n, where's my cards?" alanna called out to me. i was sitting in the designated lounge room, on one of the couches both cait and mac were here with me, but they froze when they heard alanna's voice. they had football cards scattered all over the floor, the newly ripped open packets littered in between the cards themselves. i saw their terrified faces and decided i could cover for them once. just once. "i dunno lani, maybe check your room?" i called back to her, seeing the two beside me relax a little.
alanna went back to wherever she was and the two beside me thanked me profusely. "i'm not doing it again, you know how she gets with her cards." out of the trio, mac and cait were the most passionate about these football cards. they collected them, but whenever they went to open the packets, alanna was never there. so they ended up raiding all the packets and leaving her with what was left. i never got involved but thought it was funny when they squabbled over who got which cards.
that was until i had to start breaking up the arguments and comfort lani when she got sick of the other two stealing them all. i loved them all so much, arguably i loved lani more, but they had to share at some point. it was like dealing with siblings, honestly. both cait and mac knew i was serious so they nodded and continued with their cards.
—— "guess what i got!" caitlin barged into the room with mackenzie following close behind. i looked up from my spot on the couch. "mm, let me guess. the football cards?" i already knew that this was the only thing that could get her that excited. "yes." she stated with pride in her voice. "you know lani is gonna want her share." i return to reading my book. they share a look and speak in unison. "we know."
they sit down on the floor, me watching over them. they sort the packets, making three piles for each of them, including lani's. they start ripping open the packets so i watch on, waiting until they reach for the last pile. "cait." she looks up sheepishly. "sorry." i put a hand out and she passes me all the remaining packets. "i'll surprise her with them later." mac and cait nod and go back to putting the cards in their collectors book.
—— alanna walked into the room but stopped dead in her tracks when she saw cait and mac sitting on the floor with all their cards. "thanks for saving me some." "we did. you have to see y/n." alanna was confused, and walked down the halls to try and find me. i was in my room, just reading again, when alanna walked in. "mac and cait said they saved me cards but then told me to see you. did they steal them again?" she sounded so hopeful that she finally had her own pile to open.
i grinned at her and pulled a whole pile out of my bedside table. her face lit up and she practically jumped on the bed to get them. "you saved me cards?" "i saved your cards. mac and cait would have opened them for you if i didn't." she gave me a huge hug, almost tackling me in the process of i wasn't already on the bed. "thank you thank you thank you." she was so happy to get her own packets to open.
"i'll have to do this more often if this is the reaction i get." i laugh as she gets off me. "please do, the other two are always playing games with my cards." that was very true, the other two were insanely competitive with these cards, lani was more laid back. "will do, love. anything for you." we sat on my bed the rest of the day while she opened her cards and organised them into her collectors book.
