A Bird that Never Flew

anxiousness in my belly
I am trying to hold it together
hold us together
I grab tape and staples and rope
and I try to bind us closer
but the divide expands
the valley grows
between the mountains
and I blink the tears
out of my eyes
wipe my nose
and try again
and again
and again
But the very ground shakes
my heart quakes
my fists are bathed in sweat
and I try to tug you toward me
but you drift on that island
father away
I've built a ship
but it can't reach

white flag, surrender
I can't go on anymore
I drift from shore
I am moored on a dune
and there's no more room
for hope
what once sprung eternal
has left a well dry
bone dry
I am empty
suspended

a bird that never flew
