── AND HE SAID, 'I'VE LOST MY HEAD'
. . .

SUMMARY

Matilda Moody had been convinced her father was entirely crazy for majority of her life. How couldn't she? He went on about constant vigilance like it was his personal mantra and when they moved out of Dublin so it would be easier for her to get to school and him to get to his job as an Auror he gave her the fives keys to the locks on their doors of their house on a keychain of a hundred different keys and made them change the Fidelius charm every month with increasingly random passwords.

She understood; his job meant he chased the criminals who would pose a threat to the security of their world, he had a right to be paranoid. But then again, there was paranoia against the threat of wizard felons, and there was plain insanity. It drove her crazy, as much as she loved her father, but at the very same time she found herself being Sorted into the same house as him at Hogwarts, and when it came to her career interviews and quizzes presented to her by McGonagall, everything came up with her becoming an Auror too.

And, well, what else could Matilda do but work towards it? Her life had already been impacted so much by the war, why shouldn't she try and help out where she could?

Becoming an Auror was tough. You needed the grades, the proof in subjects such as Charms and Defence Against The Dark Arts and nobody could ever imagine slacking off their seventh, most important year of school. Somewhere deep down, Matilda imagined that she had planned this all, sticking away from the crowds and the messing-abouts of her classmates, a certain kind of serious instilled in her by her father.

Which is why she couldn't imagine why the hell James Potter had waited six years to start bothering her.
