Narrator's POV
Sitting by the window at her mother's cafe, Camila listened to music from her headphones while looking at the falling leaves on Friday afternoon in the middle of autumn. She had finished all her college stuff. She had graduated and waited for the commencement ceremony, which will be held next week at the beginning of November. The college commencement ceremony was delayed due to last month's thunderstorm and a few internal issues.
It had been a month since Camila and Lucy talked at the cafe across from their college. Their best friendship ended that day. Camila no longer parked her car next to Lucy. She did not sit next to Lucy when they shared a class. She never went to the spot where they used to meet after class. She would not deny that something was missing, but she learned to let it go for good. It was not easy, but she was sure it was the best thing to do, to end their friendship, which was no longer healthy.
In the first week after they talked. Lucy tried to contact Camila through messages or calls, but Camila never answered her. Camila only answered Lucy's messages if it was urgent, but nothing was urgent in her opinion. Lucy could make it look like she needed Camila's help, only Camila could help her, but Camila knew Lucy could get help from others, not to mention Lucy had more friends than her. Camila believed those friends could help Lucy with the things she asked her through messages.
Lucy tried to talk to Camila on the campus, but Camila avoided Lucy. If Camila could not avoid Lucy, she would answer Lucy only the necessary things. She showed Lucy she was not interested in talking to her or just ignored her. Lucy finally got the message that Camila seriously did not want anything to do with her anymore. She gave up after a week of trying, knowing there was no chance left. She should have known and thought of this before she did what she did to ruin their friendship. Camila was an easygoing person, but once she was hurt she would leave and never come back.
Camila had told her mother that her friendship with Lucy had ended once she got back home from the cafe after talking to Lucy. Her mother only hugged Camila tight and did not question her decision. She understood her daughter was hurt and had to end the friendship with Lucy. On the other side, Lucy's mother only told Lucy to learn something from it. She did not say much, but she did notice what her daughter had done was wrong. Sinu and Linda were still friends even though their daughters were no longer best friends.
Camila did not hate Lucy, but she did not want to be Lucy's best friend anymore. She still smiled and nodded at Lucy when their eyes met on Campus. She would greet Lucy back with a simple hello when they walked past each other by the campus. Those who knew how close they were in the past, noticed the changes. Camila and Lucy no longer hung out and sat together. They went they separated ways. Few of their friends asked them, and neither Camila nor Lucy said anything. They just smiled and shrugged it off.
Although they still greeted each other when they met on campus, Camila chose to avoid Lucy whenever possible because she did not want the friendship back. She smiled back when Lucy smiled at her, but her smile was not big and her heart was still hurt. So, Camila chose to avoid Lucy. She did not want them to get closer again, even though not best friends. She never imagined she would call Lucy her ex-best friend today. Lucy was now only an acquaintance that she knew in the past.
It was not only Lucy whom Camila wanted to move past but also Lauren. Camila did not answer Lauren's calls and messages. Lauren had stopped calling Camila but she would sometimes send her a message telling Camila that she missed her. Camila never replied to Lauren's messages knowing that if she replied to Lauren something would start from there. Although she ignored Lauren's messages, she was still fascinated by the timing Lauren texted her. Lauren always texted her when she missed Lauren. Camila ignored and avoided Lauren, but she would think of Lauren sometimes.
