Emily had lost consciousness and Daniel feared for the worst. He held her tight against his chest, praying that she and their child would make it. There was so much blood, Daniel couldn't help but think of the worst possible scenario. He had told himself repeatedly that he hated her, but now with a real possibility of losing her, he realized he didn't. Even after everything that had happened the previous summer, he couldn't help but care for her.

This wasn't only about her. Emily was also having his child, his daughter. And now he'd risk losing both of them. She was bleeding out and with every minute, she and their daughter came closer to death.

Daniel held Emily tight until the EMTs arrived. She'd been rushed on a gurney and into the ambulance, Daniel following her in. The drive to the nearest hospital had seemed never-ending. But they had made it. Daniel barely had time to leave the ambulance before the paramedic rushed her in, with Daniel running behind them.

They'd barely walked in when the trauma surgeon met them. The paramedic presented the facts. Daniel felt powerless as he watched Emily unconscious on the gurney.

They wheeled her away, Daniel running behind them, trying to follow their pace, hoping to stay with Emily and their child. But as they reached the ORs, a nurse stopped Daniel in his chase. Placing her hand on his chest, she kept him from crossing the double door.

"You can't go with her," a nurse said.

"She's, it's my..." Daniel couldn't find the words to describe what she was to him. Who was Emily to him now? His baby momma? His ex-wife? His enemy of a sort? She was all of it, but how do you explain it to a stranger? How do you explain that despite having been married to a person and she was carrying your child, you'd probably be the last person she'd ask for in this situation? That had Emily been awake, she'd cursed him out of the ambulance and banned him from her room and from seeing your child.

"I know," the nurse acknowledged. "But this won't be like a normal c-section. You can't go with her." The nurse gave Daniel a sweet smile, trying to be reassuring.s "Mr. Grayson, I'm sorry to have to ask you this now, but in the event that the surgery does not go as planned and that we have to make a choice on who to save. Which one do we prioritize? Again Mr Grayson I'm sorry to rush you, but we need an answer now."

Who should be saved? How could Daniel answer that? How could he know what Emily would choose? He knows she'd want their daughter to make it, but she knew better than anyone what a life without a parent or without both parents was. Would she want that for their child? In the chaos, Daniel was lost. What did Emily say right before she lost consciousness? She wanted him to save their daughter. He had to save their daughter or she'd never forgive him. Maybe it was selfish, but at this moment, Daniel wanted to tell the nurse to save Emily. He knew he couldn't live without her and he'd not yet learned to live with their daughter, only the idea of her. Emily was real to him and he couldn't lose her. But he knew she could not suffer another loss and he'd promised to save their child.

"Save the baby," Daniel told the nurse.

"Are you sure?" she asked to confirm.

"I am. Save our daughter, that's what Emily would want," Daniel affirmed. "That's what she wants, it's what she asked."
