Chapter Thirty-Nine: The Zoo

||Luke POV☯ ||

"The zoo?" I say, in disbelief. "You're taking me to the zoo?"
"I knew you would love it, and then after we can go meet up with Michael, Ashton, Jack and Alex the stupid party."

"It's not a stupid party, Calum." I snap and he laughs.
"You didn't even know it was a party, until I told you." I fume as Calum stares forward, ignoring me basically. "Don't get all mad, at me, Lukey, I was just saying."

"I'm allowed to get mad," I hiss and he chuckles.
"If you were in a cartoon, you'd have turned into a dragon now." Calum laughs and I roll my eyes. "Luke, come on, don't give me your bitchy mood, we're going to the zoo."

"I'm allowed to be bitchy."
"Not today, please," Calum doesn't seem to be mad, but he's not smiling anymore. I almost give in but instead I huff and turn around.
"Come on, Luke, if you don't want us to treat you like a child, don't act like one." Calum says and I turn back to him, slowly.

"What's the point of you being my boyfriend, if all you ever do is annoy me?"
"Luke..."
"No, seriously..."
"Luke, I'm taking you to the fucking zoo and you're not allowed to be mad at me." Calum says, and he seems calmer now.
"Okay..."

Calum stays silent for the rest of the drive and I smile at him, once he parks.

"Sorry," I whisper sheepishly and he rolls his eyes and leans over and kisses my nose.
"I wouldn't be with you, if I didn't like your ridiculous mood changes," he replies.

Once in the zoo, I can't help but feeling like a huge weight is pulled off my shoulders. In the zoo, girls come, every few minutes, in small groups to take pictures with the 'famous cake couple.' Calum laughs and puts an arm around my waist. One girl tries to get in between us and Calum just grunts and she moves next to his side.

"No one gets in the middle of me and my Luke." This causes the crowd at the time to start laughing and I have the urge to roll my eyes, but I just look away.

The groups start to get smaller, until it's only a couple, and then one and then it's done and Calum asks to give us space and we race off to see some types of bird. Calum doesn't even like birds, so when I look back at him, he's already looking at me. With a look, that has become something that always reminds me of Calum.

It's a long sort of gaze, as if thinking about all the things in the future with that one person and suddenly I'm realising it a lot more. Calum always has that gaze, when I don't know he's looking at me.

When he realises I'm looking at him, he's smiling.

"You don't even like birds, why are we here?" I ask, and he stops smiling to think.
"You like birds right?" Calum says, and smiles again, "And I like you. So this is a win win."

"I like birds." I confirm and his grin seems to get wider. "I like birds."

Calum moves slowly next to me, as we walk around the zoo, his phone buzzes a couple times and he checks it, when it starts to ring.

"It's Michael," he says, "I should-"
"Yeah, go ahead."
"Nah, if it was important, he would text me or something." Calum puts his phone back into his pocket and smiles at Luke. "Come on, we have ten more birds to see, let's move."

I walk to match his speed now, and he only stops to point out the colours on the birds, he doesn't seem to care, that some of the birds are pregnant or have a broken wing. I stop to look at a bird, who seems to be sleeping and Calum stops a little fewer away.

"It's cute." Calum says, then clicks his tongue. "But Lunch won't wait for you." I sigh and Calum takes my hand, softly. "Dammit, I promised myself I wouldn't get mad at you in the bird section, but I just hate them, after what happened with my sister and me in grade 7..."

"When that bird nearly made you blind?" I ask and he nods and raises an eyebrow, "Michael told me, ages ago."
