The pain came after.

Too long after to pin it down and learn her mistake while there was still time to run.  Ink runs thicker than blood, and leaves a message for longer, so long as it's not burned or carved away.

Like those dusty books small hands would glide over.  Crumbling volumes of a world outside.

But she has promised to be much more than paper thin, more whip-like, striking and coiled to strike.

Father's daughter, perfect liar, astray prodigy.

Because the pain came after: when strips of purple flashed in the mirror, irrevocably branded, engraved deeper than any loyalty ever felt.
