"So, girlfriend." Dazai asked conversationally as they headed away from the arcade.
"No." Chuuya scoffed, looking out to the street beside them.
Dazai observed him for a moment.
"Sure."
Chuuya turned to him, unamused.
"I don't have a girlfriend." he insisted, "She's just some stray I picked up along the way. She followed me to the Sheep when I joined. The others don't really... get along... with her. That's all."
"She wouldn't happen to be the one who had to be coerced into calling for you this morning, would she?" Dazai feigned innocence and Chuuya nearly stopped in his tracks.
"Shut up." he replied after a moment, "Let's just get this over with. I don't want to have to spend any more time with you than I have to."
"Let's hope you win the bet then." Dazai cheerfully replied, having learned all he needed on the matter.
Once released from the Port Mafia's grasp, Y/n walked a few blocks with the rest of the group. They were all cheerful already, conversing about how Chuuya must have saved them all and discussing how they would get their eventual revenge. No one was saying a word to her anyways so when Y/n decided to transform once they were out of Port Mafia territory, no one noticed. She snuck away, her heart and mind set on finding her friend and getting to the bottom of everything.
She slept on the streets that night. Well, slept isn't exactly the right word for it. It had been a long time since she'd been somewhere so unsafe on her own at night and there were all these loud crashes she could hear coming from a distance. She had tried her best to sleep, maybe gotten a half hour or so in here or there. As soon as the sun rose, she was off again, still in her rabbit form, still searching.
The sun was high in the sky by the time she caught a scent. Following it like a dog, she found her way to the edge of Suribachi City. A little graveyard on a cliffs edge, overlooking the sea. Her ear twitched as it caught a familiar voice.
"What a pain in the ass, even in death." Chuuya was saying as he sat on a tombstone, eyes fixed on the horizon "The Port Mafia took all the records you'd collected on Arahabaki. Thanks to you, I have no leads. Well, not that you would have told anyone about that stuff, even if you'd been alive."
He spun himself around with a subtle grace and jumped off, beginning to make his way towards the edge of the forest.
Just as she was about to run out to him, something else caught her attention and she carefully hid in some nearby underbrush.
"I've been looking for you, Chuuya." said the boy as he approached.
Y/n recognized him to be Shirase, one of the higher up members in the Sheep. His hands were shoved deep into the pockets of his coat. The two boys stopped walking, standing five feet apart or so. They started one another down.
"Shirase." Chuuya greeted him, "How'd you find me here?"
"I wanted to apologize to you." he admitted with a shrug and a smile, walking towards Chuuya, "We did some soul-searching after what happened. We have a good understanding of the Sheep's problems now."
The Sheep's problems? Y/n wondered. What on earth have I missed?
"So we talked it over and came up with a solution." Shirase continued, stopping a few feet behind Chuuya, the boys backs now turned to one another.
Chuuya turned to face him in a placid sort of confusion.
"If it's something you decided together, I won't-"
From where Y/n was hidden, she couldn't quite see what happened next. Chuuya had suddenly fallen silent and she could feel it in her bones that something was very wrong. The ground vibrated slightly, the sign of an approaching group.
"You..." Chuuya began, his voice weaker than it had been before.
There was a grunt and Y/n saw him fall to the ground, supporting himself with his hands.
"We attack you from outside your periphery, when your guard is completely down." Shirase announced, the smile that must have been on his face evident in his voice, "That way, you won't have time to use gravity. Right, Chuuya?"
The tremors Y/n could feel in the ground beneath her feet were becoming stronger. Everything inside her that was animal was begging she run away while the human side fought for her to run to him, to Chuuya, her oldest friend, the only person she truly had in the world. In the conflict of body and mind, she found herself frozen to the spot.
"What do you think you're doing?" Chuuya asked.
He had meant for it to sound accusatory. Instead, it came out more like a prayer.
"You should try not to move." Shirase instructed, "I rubbed rat poison on the blade. Your limbs will be numb and immobilized for a while. You wouldn't had had to go through this if you weren't so strong."
Y/n's blood ran cold at the confirmation on what had occurred and what was going to happen next. Whatever had been coming? It had arrived and it took the form of eight heavily armed, full grown men followed by the rest of the Sheep. They cocked their guns, aiming them at Chuuya. What froze her to the spot now was fear.
"Guys!" Chuuya cried out, pleading for his life.
"This was the solution we came up with." Shirase explained coldly, clearly the Sheep's new leader, "We'll team up with the GSS. We all came to the realization that if you were not going to side with us, you'd get everyone in the Sheep killed."
What could one little rabbit of a girl, more rabbit than girl in this moment, do in the face of something like that? Maybe everyone had been right all along, she really was useless. Absolutely useless.
"I would never betray the organization!" Chuuya insisted, his voice hoarse.
"Unlike you, the GSS doesn't change its loyalties on a whim." Shirase shot back,
They can be trusted as long as they can profit. This is the smarter way to fight against the Port Mafia!"What had happened since she'd been gone? It had only counted up to about a day and a half in total since the Port Mafia had captured them. Y/n couldn't believe what was happening.
"I suppose I was the fool." Chuuya said softly, so softly Y/n almost didn't catch it.
There was a crash and she watched as Chuuya began to glow red, a telltale sign of his ability having been activated. The cliff began to crumble out from underneath him.
"Get him! Fire!" Shirase instructed.
Y/n's cry of warning was drowned out by the sound of gunshots echoing through the open air of the cliff.
