POV: Caroline
I don't know what I walked in on but I definitely ruined a moment between those two.
Haelyn was in Selene's arms recovering after clearly crying, both of them talking peacefully and definitely starting to open up and heal on their own, and I just barged in and interrupted them.
I had been so excited from being in such a grand place and knowing I get to stay there that I hadn't even taken a moment before calming down. Those two were doing so well and, as their therapist, I was proud, and I'm upset and infuriated with myself now that I got in the way.
Selene has just been standing at the bottom of the stairs, staring at the spot she last saw Haelyn standing before she disappeared to go to bed again. I've just been standing behind her, waiting for her to say something or waiting for a moment that feels right to finally break this silence. I feel so weird just standing behind her silently, but I need to ask her something.
"I know I should just leave her to sleep," Selene starts, breaking our silence to my relief. "But I just want to hold her again. I just want to talk to her and hold her close."
I can hear the longing in her voice as she explains her current feelings to me. All she wants to do is be close to Haelyn and care for her, and it clearly hurts her for Haelyn to be so distant. These two care so much for each other but they just can't see how much the other cares for them.
"Just leave her be for now. Let her sleep and settle back in," I assure Selene, stepping to her side. "Just relax and find something to do to distract your mind. A puzzle, a game, preferably not your work, though."
She doesn't question me nor wanting her to do anymore work, instead moving to the side and opening two large doors into such a magnificent living room. There's a chandelier and marble fireplace and all the fancy bells and whistles anyone could ever need in a living room. In the corner by a large window, there's also a large and undecorated Christmas tree, boxes of taped up Christmas decorations and boxes of new decorations beside it.
I sigh at the sight, knowing Selene won't distract herself by decorating the tree unless Haelyn comes down and joins in. I sit beside Selene on the couch, looking around for anything to do, preferably together so that I can distract her myself.
The TV won't work, she could just zone out and keep thinking. Leaving her in silence won't work either since she just keeps thinking. Eventually my eyes land on a pile of games, cards and game boards and all. Perfect.
I scurry over and rummage through them, picking out a few basic ones and some longer games. A pack of regular playing cards, Monopoly, UNO and a few others I've never seen before. A good selection that'll all provide enough of a distraction to Selene that she'll leave Haelyn alone for a bit. It should also give me a chance to ask her if she found out any information about Haelyn Walker.
I offer all of them to Selene as cheerfully as I can, pressuring her a little to pick one as she raises a brow, doubting me. She eventually picks Monopoly, a bit too my dismay since I've never been great at it, but if she wants to play this game, I kind of have to comply - especially since I offered her the game.
I set it all up, Selene watching over me, picking out her playing piece as I pick out mine, settling on the floor opposite me. I deal out all the paper money and we start playing, Selene instantly taking the lead. Not only does she have good luck with her dice rolls but with any card she draws is also beneficial to her. Her business knowledge also shines through as we keep playing. She knows when to expand her owned properties and knows when to give them up, and I'm quickly losing.
