Darkness, pure and utter darkness.

That was exactly what Elijah had both felt and witnessed in the past hours. He'd witnessed just how cold and utterly alone he'd become ever since falling into Mara's trap. Had felt the pure and unadulterated hopelessness at the realization that he may very well not live another day, that he might never go home to his family again.

His thoughts were both racing at an unfathomable rate, and at a stand-still all at the same time. How such a thing was possible, he did not know, did not care to ask himself as it wasn't exactly his top priority at the moment.

'It's cold, so utterly, chillingly, skin searingly cold. This indescribable emptiness in my chest, spreading throughout my body, is worse than any pain or punishment I've ever experienced or had to witness. Is this what it feels like? To be hopeless, to have no drive, no passion, no reason to push on any further?'

Elijah couldn't even take a moment to breathe as the thoughts ran rampant through his mind, images of all the years of memories he'd formulated with his family flashing  in his eyes. His family, his reason for waking up in the morning, the people whom he'd stood by for over a thousand years. The people that he'd kill for, who he had killed for, the ones who he prayed would come to save him, even if he knew that was just pointless prayer.

All the noises surrounding him seemed to bleed together, forming a symphony meant to lull him into the never ending darkness that he'd forever be stuck in once he succumbed to it. Such a warm and welcoming invite to that land of death, to that ceaseless inability to feel or do anything, to be stuck, watching those whom you've spent years building memories and relationships with continue to live on. Without you.

Every emotion, every sound, every breath that he took all bled together so perfectly that he didn't even register the faded footsteps that were beginning to become louder as they neared closer to him. He didn't register the baited breaths she took as he slowly came into her view, didn't see the way she halted at the sight of him, at his eyes which were now devoid of that casual grace and determination they usually carried with them.

"Elijah", the word seemed to reverberate throughout the warehouse, the knowledge of her presence alone causing his undead heart to skip a beat in his chest.

His head whipped to face her, eyes literally shaking with fear and recognition. At the realization that the very woman who'd done this to him had come to claim him, to claim his life, his soul, his happiness, and his purpose.

Though, as she began to walk toward him, sleeves rolled up and eyes ablaze with something akin to purpose, he realized that she wasn't here to claim him.

She was here to free him.
