AS SOON AS November had hit, it felt like the weather had decided to finally partake in the pre-winter spirit. It had been days of merciless rain pouring down and wind howling. Everyone at school had started to wear puffer jackets and sweatpants and the school had lost all control over maintaining a proper uniform standard.
It was an ordinary November night. The clock had just struck 12 on early Saturday morning and Jungwon found himself in his living room, dressed in his usual pair of grey sweatpants and a thick black hoodie.
He was sat next to his dad, who was going through the mail which had arrived days earlier. His mom was at some kind of corporate function.
And suddenly his mind was filled with thoughts about Haejin. It had been days since he was forced to watch her slowly slip away into darkness, days since he was tortured by the fact that he couldn't do anything to help her.
To Jungwon, this feeling was unfamiliar. It felt like his heart was breaking every time she ignored him or every time he saw her talk to a guy that wasn't him. But he felt like the happiest man on the earth when she was next to him, in his arms.
He felt a sense of comfort around her, but also felt butterflies swarm around his stomach even when they made the slightest of eye contact.
So, he turned to his dad.
"Dad, how do you know you're in love with someone?"
His dad turned his head sharply, a rather surprised smile growing on his face as he raised his glasses up on his nose bridge. "Well," he pursed his lips, looking down at the paper in his hands, before looking back up at his son.
"To love someone is a feeling that can not be explained. When you love someone with your entire heart, you feel more than attraction towards them. You want to care for them, be next to them. You want to make them laugh, you want to make them smile. You miss them terribly when your away from them, and when your with them you never want to let them go. You feel comfortable around this person, you can be who you truly are with this person. When their in pain, you can feel it too. But the thing I've realised most is that love may give you the most happiness, but it can also hurt you the most."
