Pulled Both Ways

The next day at lunch, I found Kenny in his usual spot behind the school. I said a silent prayer that things wouldn't be weird between us after we almost made out.

"Hey, Kenny." He was sitting on the bedside of a school grounds maintenance pickup truck, orange hood pulled up like usual. I climbed up the tire and sat next to him.

"Hey yourself."

"So... the book?" I asked.

Kenny sparked a cigarette. "The only person I ever knew to have a copy of it was Henrietta Biggle. She used to be one of the goth kids, but she tried to kill herself or something and got sent to the mental hospital. My next best guess would be Jim McElroy's house."

"And that is...?"

"He ran the cult meetings in South Park. After the cult disbanded, his house was abandoned and condemned. It's still there, on the outskirts of town, but it's vacant."

"Oh, joy. I'm guessing we'll have to break in and venture down into the spooky basement?" I rolled my eyes and asked sarcastically.

"Pretty much."

"Oh, Christ, I was kidding, Kenny!"

He chuckled. "Relax, I'll keep you safe... I used to be good at protecting people."

I put my head on his shoulder and reveled in the feeling of safety that I enjoyed in his presence. "You still are."

I closed my eyes and felt the sun on my face. It felt so effortless and natural to just have him present beside me.

I suddenly got an idea. "Hey, we can drive there tomorrow! I'm getting my car back. I'll pick you up after school!"

"You have a car? Since when?"

"Yeah, a Mustang! I'm going with Kyle's dad to the DMV tomorrow to get the title and insurance fixed. Then I can drive again!" I beamed at him.

"You should let me drive sometime." Kenny smirked at me. "I'm like, NASCAR good."

"Hell the fuck no, no one drives my car but me," I laughed.

The lunch bell rang, and Kenny hopped down off the bed of the truck. He placed his hands around my waist and lifted me down, too. Feeling his hands around my waist and how easily he lifted me down made me blush.

Kenny walked me to Shop, and we met up with Stan in the hallway.

"So I hear you guys almost ki-" Stan was cut off by Kenny.

"Shut the fuck up, dude!"

I clasped my hand over my mouth, mortified. Kenny told Stan that we almost kissed? Who else did he tell?

"Okay, okay, sorry. Kyle's not happy about it, though." Stan shrugged.

"What the hell do you mean?! Kyle knows, too?" I pressed Stan for more information.

"Well, yeah, he deserved to know. He was holding out hope for you, but now you're with Kenny. It was only fair to let him know he should move on," Stan explained.

"Oh my god, Stan! What the hell? I'm not with Kenny, I'm not with anybody! God, I'm sick of small town gossip." I got angry at Stan, and out of the corner of my eye, I saw Kenny look disappointed. I didn't mean it like that, but I was too pissed off at Stan to take back any words right now. I broke away from the two of them and took a different route to shop, arriving before Stan. I guess they had stopped to talk in the hallway after I bailed.

I sat down in my seat and felt my phone buzz with a text.

Unknown: I tried to be a nice guy and you did me wrong. I have half a mind to tell my dad to drop your case right now.
