After breakfast the four of them went out to the garden for a bit, Hermione took a book she'd chosen from the shelf in her room and the other three pulled out the brooms. Hermione would occasionally glance up at where the children were tossing a quaffle back and forth a couple meters off the ground. Their feet would have been level with Draco's head, if he'd been on the ground instead of twenty feet above the children.
"Hey Scorp! Wanna race?" Rose called,
"Sure!"
Draco dropped down to level with the kids,
"Here, line up even you two. No cheating."
Hermione watched as the two lined up the ends of their brooms even with the handle of Draco's on the far side of the yard.
Rose leaned over to Scorpius, "first one to mum wins!" she said, and then Draco called the start. The two youngsters took off straight towards her. Scorpius pulled ahead pretty quickly. Whether from pure bravado or actual skill she wasn't sure, but he pulled up short about three foot away and executed the smoothest moving dismount she'd ever seen- at least until his father pulled the same trick with exponentially more grace, his broom over his shoulder as he walked to join the group gathered around Hermione. Rose was only half a second behind Scorpius, and made a fluid turn around her before coming to a stop, still on her broom but low enough to be eye level with Draco. "Ah you win Scorp. That was a neat trick though, you gotta show me how to do it." Rose called, grinning down at her friend.
"Well played Rose. That last turn was beautiful." Draco said, looking up at her.
"Thanks Drake!" The kids took off again, Scorpius showing Rose how to manage the dismount while she rode circles around him- literally. Draco stood beside Hermione's chair and watched the two flying. "thank you for the way you handled the conversation at breakfast." he said after a bit, eyes not leaving the kids. Hermione glanced up at him from her spot on the low garden lounge. The early sunlight caught in his hair, giving it a nearly golden cast and Hermione had to remind herself that she was still technically married.
"I couldn't leave things the way their history book set it out."
He looked down at her, "no, you could have said a million condemning things about my family."
"Your mother saved Harry's life. You could have confirmed our identities the day the snatchers brought us in and you didn't- among other things. And Your father..." she turned back to watching the children flying back and forth across the yard. "Well I'm not privy to your relationship with your father but I would never wish to sully a child's opinion of their only living grandfather, no matter what I think of the man."
"Thank you for that." He leaned against his broom, "what have you been reading this morning?"
Hermione turned the book in her hands over so that he could see the cover, "It's the second novel in a series Ginny recommended to me ages ago. I found the set on the shelf in my room."
"What do you think of it?"
"Oh it's terrible." She laughed "It's full of sparkly vegetarian american vampires and the main character is this teenage girl who has absolutely no sense of self-preservation and of course everyone wants her."
"Of course." he agreed, smiling at her, "Personally, I take issue with how the author depicts the werewolves."
"How so?" she tilted her head,
"Well they're obviously animagi, not actual werewolves. I mean, being able to shift on command?" he paused thinking, "The whole werewolf pack mentality thing is accurate enough for werewolves, though the fact that they all shift into the same animal is a bit strange for animagi so I'm not sure where she got that from. The Vampires act more like werewolves in my opinion."
