Okay so simple step one, lineart. Blank, unedited lineart, preferably on one layer. Can be any colour, any style.

Step two, flatcolour. Literally just what it sounds like, flatcolour is just the plain colours filled into the lineart, on a layer below.

Step three, decide on what lighting you're going for

Step three, decide on what lighting you're going for. I'm going a purple starry night here. So, I've created a low opacity black layer over the top of everything. If you're doing a light scene, choose yellow, or if it's reflected off fire, orange, etc.

I also just airbrushed the backdrop here, but that's optional.

Step four, on a layer in between the colour and lineart, add the lights

Step four, on a layer in between the colour and lineart, add the lights. Don't do them white every time, add some colour based on the scene. Neon is good here! Trust me, it won't look awful, it's just highlights.

Think about where the light is coming from (in this, from the top right) and imagine it flooding over the drawing for a better visualisation on where to put the light. Sometimes, less is more.

Last step, add the shadows! They can be done in half opacity black, but this can be lightened or darkened depending on the light levels you need

So there you have it! My simple but badly explained shading techniques xD
