A/n: Ngl this fic won't be as long as some of my other full stories, I don't want to add filler for the sake of chapter count you know? Stick to the story that needs to be told and leave it at that.
Misa being out of the picture entirely meant the taskforce wouldn't find out about the existence of shinigami until they actually had a death note in their hands. Instead, L had been plotting ways to plant the seeds of greater powers into the minds of those around him in other ways.
He already had something to work with here, the heart attack deaths. The fact Kira had control over victims before their died, how they died and obviously the fact the default being a heart attack, when the victims have no prior health issues, was seriously pointing toward the supernatural. Those kinds of things didn't just happen, there was no scientific explanation for them. And L knew that all of the taskforce knew deep down that was the case, just didn't want to admit it yet. Your entire worldview changing practically overnight can be jarring after all.
But he needed to plant those seeds in their minds, so he could push Light towards finding out about the multiverse. I'd be rather suspicious of him to probe JUST Light, he had to poke the others with thoughts if the greater powers that be too. It was a careful balance he had to pull off here, not be suspiciously focused on Light, not out the multiverse to anyone BUT Light, and do it in a way that makes Light become he came to the conclusion himself. And that's what he'd been doing over the past months. You'd watch him, report anything you noticed about the taskforce as you did. If they'd started to believe in greater powers or not.
You see, L was smart, that was his whole job, to be smart and solve problems. So he had an idea. Your constant watching of him gave him the beginnings of an idea that blossomed into a full on plan.
Going ahead like the original case did, he allowed Light to join in on the taskforce meetings. His father wasn't too pleased to know his son was a suspect of course, but that was just something he'd have to deal with, since Light WAS indeed Kira. Not only had L allowed Light to join the meetings, he'd make very subtle comments, actions that suggested he knew there was a shinigami in the room with them only when Light was around.
He knew that Ryuk would likely be behind Light most of the time, so he'd glance up over Lights shoulder every so often. He'd make comments like 'doesn't this hotel feel haunted?' when it was just he and Light in the room. If Light believed L knew there was something supernatural happening in this case, or maybe that he could even see Ryuk or knew about the Death Note, he'd surely get paranoid. The more paranoid he was, the more rash his decisions would be. He'd get sloppy, start desperately trying to dig into L's mind for answers. And when he was primed to believe L knew something more than he lead on, that's when he'd play the ultimate mind game.
And it seems, today was that day.
It was just him and Light, the rest of the taskforce talking in the next room over. The two had broken off into a conversation about if Light was still a suspect, to which L didn't give him a straight answer. Light sighed a little frustrated but knew he'd not get any straight answers from L by now.
"Right... so I'll take that as I'm still a suspect. But out of curiosity here... how would I even be killing? I'm a full time university student in a tough course, I have no time to kill nor any weapons to do it with" Light said.
"We know Kira can control the time of death. Meaning he can set aside victims for a certain time, so your schedule no matter how busy doesn't play into the matter. And let's be honest here... heart attack deaths with only a name and face isn't the result of a gun, knife, poison... there's something else out there" L replied.
Light raised an eyebrow, portraying that he was confused but his slight tense up told you and L who watched him that he was anxious about L knowing of the supernatural.
"Don't you think that's weird? No weapon, no traces of poisons or drugs, no prior health problems. Like they just up and died for no reason? It sounds almost... fictional. Yet here it is, right in front of us" L continued.
"I mean... it is kind of weird. But what would it even be? Witchcraft? Vengeful spirits? Those things don't exist. It must be something like a new undetectable drug or poison or-" Light replied.
"And the control over times of death? That can't be explained away with some untraceable substance. I don't know how much I believe in the divine, but I know this isn't natural"
"Where would a power like that have even come from?"
L fought back the smirk that wanted to crack on his lips, this was what he'd been waiting for.
"Don't know. Some other universe maybe..." he replied, in a half joking manner.
Light was silent a moment, with how much he'd been overthinking and over analysing L's very word, the detective knew he'd take a phrase as vague as that, said in a joking manner and run with it. You had to give it to L, he could be really manipulative when he needed to be. You watched from your room, quite literally eating popcorn as you did. You felt like you needed the classic move snack when you sat down to watch this meeting, things were getting real tense in the case lately.
"Oohhh shit, there it is..." you muttered.
Light verbally brushed it off, but his body language told you everything you needed to know. The seed has been planted in his mind, now you just had to wait for him to have the eureka moment.
Your little movie night was suddenly interrupted by knocking on the outside of your walls, making you jump and almost drop your popcorn. You flipped your screen to the outside of your room, expecting to see some cosmic traveller here to wish, but you had a heart attack when you saw the image of your boss standing outside.
"SHIT! What's he doing here again?!" You panicked, quickly snapping the mess into the back room and changing the screen to some random universe.
Unlocking the room, letting him in, you had to play it cool like you weren't actively interfering with a universe.
"Heeeey man! What are you doing here again?" You asked.
The Narrator stepped inside, looking around at the not pristine but not messy room you dwelled in and the universe on the screen playing out.
"That alert that went off a few months ago, has it been dealt with (y/n)?" They asked.
"That? Oh yeah, fixed that months ago. Easy fix too, don't worry about it" you replied.
"Really? Then why haven't the reports been filed on the matter?"
Shhiiittttt.... Thank the gods you weren't in your 2D form right now or you'd be literally blurring with the anxiety.
"Ah, my bad. I'm just a bit behind. A lotta universes to keep up with you know? And I've had a spike in wishers here too recently. Guess some corner of the multiverse harnessed travel magic" you replied.
Something told you that Mr Narrator here wasn't buying it, but they didn't have any proof to say you were lying either.
"May I see this universe that set off the alarm then?" They asked.
Oh no... oh no, no, no. This was bad, this could be bad. One slip up and you're caught, you hoped to the gods L wasn't still talking to Light about the supernatural, you'd be in deep shit. Your kind were experts at telling when a universe developed magic naturally, as was what was meant to happen. Or when someone has introduced the concept, which was a bad, bad idea.
All you could do though, was turn on the screen to L's universe and hope you wouldn't get caught helping him in the act.
