I was sitting in my room reading a book, when my door slammed wide opened and in walked Conrad.

I placed the book down, sensing he needed to share something important.

"Conrad what's wrong". I asked concern lacing my tone.

For a minute Conrad looked like he was going to say something, but he broke down it tears and was gasping for breath.

I quickly dropped down to the floor.

"Conrad look at me, what's happening".

"I can't breathe", he choked out

"Conrad I need you to focus on me, can you do that".

Once I was sure he understood what I was saying.

I placed his hand on my chest, letting him feel the deep breathes I was taking.

After a few minutes had passed, his breathing had started to calm down.

"Do you want to talk about it", I asked.

"My mum's cancer, it's back".

A million thoughts raced through my mind. But I settled for asking him how long he had known.

"Since the start of summer".

I wanted to tell Conrad, I was sorry. But I knew he wouldn't want that.

"Conrad your mum is a fighter, she'll recover".

"You think so", he quietly asked.

"I know so".

I felt Conrad lean his head on my shoulder, we stayed like that all night, sometimes all we need is a shoulder to lean on.
