In the stillness of the night, the moon's pale glow barely penetrated the dark veil of clouds, casting eerie shadows on the empty road. Seokmin, gripping the steering wheel with white-knuckled intensity, glanced at his son, Seungmin, slumbering peacefully beside him. His heart swelled with a fierce protectiveness. They had just stopped at a local grocery store, Seokmin making sure to carefully secure Seungmin’s seatbelt before locking the car and double-checking the security.

Returning to the driver's seat, Seokmin started the car. The hum of the engine was abruptly shattered by the sharp crack of a bullet piercing the air, the windshield splintering as the deadly projectile narrowly missed Seungmin. Reflexively, Seokmin ducked, narrowly avoiding a second shot that whizzed past his ear. His heart pounding, he slammed on the accelerator, the car lurching forward as it sped down the deserted road. Glancing quickly at Seungmin, Seokmin’s relief was palpable; no shards of glass had harmed his son.

“Seungmin! Are you okay?” Seokmin’s voice was thick with fear and urgency. The boy nodded, his wide eyes reflecting a mix of confusion and terror.

Desperately weaving through the darkened streets, Seokmin’s mind raced. He caught sight of a car in the rearview mirror, its headlights burning into the night, relentlessly pursuing them. Panic surged through him, but he forced himself to stay focused, making erratic turns in an attempt to lose their pursuer. His pulse raced as he urged the car to its limits, reaching speeds of 160 kilometers per hour.

“M-minnie, take my phone and dial 112,” Seokmin commanded, his voice strained. Seungmin’s small fingers fumbled with the device, but the call failed to connect. The signal was jammed. Seokmin cursed under his breath.

“Baby, get on the floorboard and close your eyes and ears,” he ordered, his voice breaking. Tears streamed down Seungmin’s face as he obeyed, curling up on the floor of the car.

The car jolted violently as a bullet struck the front wheel, causing it to slow dramatically. Seokmin groaned in frustration and pain, his mind a flurry of desperate prayers for his son’s safety. Miraculously, the gunfire ceased, and the pursuing car disappeared into the night. Seokmin brought their vehicle to a halt, relief washing over him as he embraced Seungmin, both of them trembling with fear and relief.

Gathering his courage, Seokmin stepped out of the car, keeping Seungmin close. A man emerged from the shadows, charging at them with a knife. Seokmin reacted instinctively, kicking the attacker and pinning him to the ground, delivering a series of punches until the man was rendered unconscious. As he turned back to Seungmin, his blood ran cold. Another assailant loomed behind his son, knife poised to strike.

With a surge of adrenaline, Seokmin yanked Seungmin towards him, narrowly saving him from the blade. The would-be killer stumbled, missing his mark. Seokmin fell to his knees, clutching Seungmin to his chest, ready to shield his son with his own life. He braced himself for the fatal blow that never came.

Glancing back, Seokmin saw the attacker sprawled on the ground, a brutal wound in his neck. He followed the trail of blood to its source and his breath caught in his throat.

Joshua stood there, blood spattered across his face and clothes, a knife in his hand. His smile, meant to be reassuring, seemed grotesque in the dim light. Seokmin quickly shielded Seungmin’s eyes from the macabre sight.

“Missed me, babe?” Joshua’s voice was unnervingly calm as he advanced, raising his knife. Seokmin’s heart pounded as he prepared to shield his son once more. But the scream that followed was not theirs.

Another figure had ambushed Joshua, tackling him to the ground. Joshua’s eyes blazed with fury as he overpowered his assailant, delivering a series of punishing blows. “Don’t. You. Dare. Touch. Him.” Each word was punctuated by a savage punch. Finally, with a final, brutal stab to the eye, Joshua ended the threat.

Panting, Joshua turned his attention back to Seokmin, rushing to his side. He hugged Seokmin fiercely, heedless of the blood. Seokmin, overwhelmed, tried to push him away, but Joshua clung on, frantic with concern.

“Seokmin, are you okay? Did you get hurt?” Joshua’s voice was a mix of fear and relief.

“I’m okay, sir,” Seokmin managed, his voice trembling. “Thank you so much. My child could not survive without you.” He tried to leave, but Joshua wouldn't budge.
