Maya was sitting by Carina's bed holding her hand, the same place she had been for the last 45 minutes. Dr. Wilson and an intern had recently been in to update Maya.
They confirmed that everything remained positive and that Carina's stats are good, she is stable, her blood count was looking much better, and that they hope she will wake in the next hour at most.
As Maya is staring at her phone, at the picture she took of their son in the NICU she feels a small pressure on her hand. Her head shoots up realising that it is Carina, she is gently squeezing her hand.
"Babe?" She says. "Can you hear me?" Maya stands, pocketing her phone and leaning over Carina's bed, gently stroking her face with her free hand.
After a few seconds her eyes flutter, she blinks rapidly opening and closing her eyes against the harsh light in the room. Maya lets out a sound somewhere between a laugh and a sob at the sight in front of her "hey, it's me. You're safe, it's ok..." She coo's trying to help Carina come to.
Carina fights the urge to keep her eyes shut and forces them open as she looks up at Maya's watery blue eyes gazing into her own eyes. "Hey." She croaks.
Maya laughs out in joy and relief with a wide smile in place "hi baby, god it's good to see you." Maya can't help herself; she leans in, placing a soft kiss on her wifes lips.
Carina smiles slightly blinking before seeming to register what happened, she places a hand on her tummy as worry settles on her face "the baby? Where is he? Is he ok?" She asks frantically.
Maya smiles nodding "he's fine, calm down ok. He's perfect. He's so perfect." She says.
Carina smiles, worry giving way to relief at that. "Ok good, that's good. Where is he?" She says looking round, not seeing a cot in the room.
"He's in the NICU, but it's ok, it's just a precaution. Apparently standard for babies born anything under 36 weeks. But everything is looking good. He is strong and healthy." She tells her wife.
"I need to see him." She says.
Maya nods, understanding her wifes need to see their son, but knowing she has only just woken from emergency surgery wants to keep her calm. "I know babe, but let me call for Dr. Wilson first, you just had major surgery, she needs to know you're awake and then we can arrange to go see him ok?" She says gently.
Carina pouts a little but knows her wife is right, and if she does something silly she may cause herself bigger delays in being able to meet their son properly. "Ok."
Shortly after going to alert the nurses to her wife waking up, Dr. Wilson appears in the doorway. "Nice to see you awake, Carina. You gave us quite the scare in the OR." She smiles.
Carina smiles back "thank you for taking care of me. And our son."
Dr. Wilson nods. "Speaking of your son, I understand you are keen to pay him a visit?" She says.
Carina nods quickly "yes please."
Dr. Wilson moves to the monitors looking at the numbers. "Ok well if I can get you to be patient for half an hour or so, we can do the necessary checks and tests, and then all being well I will arrange for a porter to bring a wheelchair for you to go down to the NICU. That sound fair?" She asks.
Carina nods "yes, ok thank you."
True to her word, just over half an hour later Maya and Carina are sitting in the room as Dr. Wilson confirms the outcome of the tests and checks and tells Carina she is happy for her to go to the NICU, on the condition that she stays calm and doesn't attempt to walk anywhere for any reason.
